BF-ing moms when did you add pumping in?

Hi.  I have been BF-ing since birth(two weeks now) and was wondering when is a good time to start pumping a little.  It would be nice to have some milk on hand so my husband can help with the feeding.  I thought I read to wait a little while on the pumping, but how long?  I don't want to mess up how well he has been doing on the BF-ing.  What are you all doing.  Thanks.

  • I always pump right after feeding.  You probably wont get much so it might take a few pumping sessions to get enough for one bottle feeding.

  • You can start pumping whenever you like to start a stash on supply, as BM is good in the fridge for three days and good in the freezer for three months. But as far as introducing the bottle, thats all up to you. I think the rumor was 6 weeks? Im not sure. But i introduced the bottle at 6 days, and LO doesnt have any nipple confusion. I breastfeed mostly everyday, and only give him the bottle if i am out at a store or visiting with friends/family and dont feel comfortable breastfeeding at the time.

  • I started pumping at least once a day at about 2.5 weeks and we started giving DD a bottle once a day at 3 weeks.  I try to freeze a couple ounces a day to build up a supply in addition to saving several ounces in the fridge for her daily bottle.  I try to pump just after feeding her when I know she is finished but when it will be at least an hour or two until she needs to eat again, that way it increases my production and doesn't starve her.  I tend to have more milk in the mornings, so that is when I typically pump or I will pump while she is getting her bottle.

  • I agree with pp, pump right after a feeding to start.  You won't get much at first, but your supply will increase.

At this point, Z is sleeping through the night and goes down around 9:30pm.  So right before I go to bed, around 12:00pm, I pump and am now getting about 4 ounces to freeze each night.

Same thing for me.   I started pumping because my breasts were extremely engorged and my nipples were chapped and really sore at about 10 days old.   In the hospital, all baby wanted was to be attached to my breasts.   I actually slept with him attached a few nights!   I sent my husband to buy a pump and its really really helped.  Baby has no confusion at all.   I really like pumping and bottle feeding because I know just how much he is getting.  I probably pump and BF 50/50% .  He sleeps better, i feel better, and he still gets the nutrition from breast feeding.  I love the bonding with the baby when he nurses, but he would be attached to me more than half of the day if I didn't pump and btl feed.

  • Day 4.
