Cloth Diapering

Organizing your diapers and inserts?

I was wondering how and where they put there diapers?

Do you put the inserts with them and have them ready for use?

Where do you store them?

I dont know what i am doing with this whole cloth diapering thing and need some help..

Re: Organizing your diapers and inserts?

  • Can't wait to see the responses to this topic! I've been slowly building my NB stash with a variety of diapers but have no idea how I should keep them all straight, especially for DH! With a decent variety -prefolds, covers, FBs, Ecobums, Flip- I'm not sure what should go where so that I'm not running around trying to find what I need when the baby needs a diaper change.

I keep the inserts with the diaper, and extras go in a cabinet on the bottom.

  • It has evolved over time, but I have a decent system (at least for me) at this point.

I have enough pocket diapers that I can wash and dry a set of diapers and inserts, machine-dry the inserts, and pre-stuff the pockets that are already in storage. When I finish line-drying the pockets I just washed, they go into drawers ready for the next round of wash. I hope that made sense. The pre-stuffed diapers are near DD's changing table so I can just grab one and put it on her.

We have an old hutch with a set of 6 drawers in front. One has CDs with snaps and one has CDs with aplix. One has inserts, separated by fabric (bamboo, MF, cotton). The other drawers are for DD's clothes, socks, hats, etc. I have a bookcase in her room with a fabric bin for covers (PUL and wool). I don't use a ton of fitteds or PFs at this point, so they don't need to be in the drawers with the rest of the CD stuff.

  • Holy crap.  We only have 20 diapers, all pockets or AIOs.  I stuff everything ahead of time then stack in a drawer in her changing table/dresser.  I keep the extra inserts stacked in the drawer also along with the wipes in a disposable wipe container, wipe liquid in a small bottle.  I only have two hemp inserts, so I always make her night time diaper right before bed.  I just put the hemp insert into one of her already stuffed diaper under the microfiber insert.

  • Back when my stash was in the beginning stages, all my pockets fit in a very large basket. I would wash, dry, stuff, all in the same day. Now my stash is sort of unwieldy and I am lazy about washing/stuffing in the same day. So, I wash my diapers every other day, and I hang dry the pockets and inserts. I will take the previous wash load that has been drying for two days and the inserts, stuff those diapers, and put it in my large basket on my changing table/storage area. I have a ridiculous amount of inserts, so I put those all in a collapsible bin with my old prefolds. I use the Expedit storage case from IKEA as our changing table/storage area.  Sometimes I will just grab a diaper that is hanging in the laundry room and stuff as I go.

  • I think we've figured out our method.

We're using the antique dresser in her bedroom as a changing table as well, so the three smallest drawers on top are used for extra inserts and prefolds (hemp and bamboo on one side, PFs in the middle and microfiber inserts on the other side).

Beside the dresser we are going to have a multi-basket/drawer storage system (haven't purchased it yet) to separate diapers, and covers, by type. I intend to have pocket diapers pre-stuffed for convenience. I think this makes it easier for DH, because I plan to label the storage baskets/drawers for him.

Extra diapers that she isn't yet wearing (wrong size) will go in the cubbies in the walk-in closet.

  • Where we store diapers - She's In our room still so we store the diapers in a plastic dresser bin. It has a few drawers and I put two baskets on top.

How we store diapers - After laundry is dry I put clean diapers in the baskets with everything they need..so shells with snap in insert, fitted with insert and fleece liner, and pockets pre-stuffed. So they are ready to go. Extras (fleece liners, replacement inserts, hemp inserts etc) go into the first two little drawers. The bigger drawer under hold prefolds, wool longies/soakers and PUL covers.

I don't need too much storage they are never all stored together.. while half are in pail or being washed the other half are being used. Hope that helps!

  • We don't have a ton of diapers either but we use the top drawer of an IKEA dresser.  Depending on what we are using-our set up changes.  For example, we used all prefolds and fitteds in the NB stage but now we use mostly pockets/some fitteds.  During NB stage we kept a few of the next size up (thirsties duos/small fitteds/small AIOs) just so I could keep checking to see if we could increase our stash.

We bought drawer organizers made for the dresser and that helps a lot.  We have a row of pockets/AIOs, a compartment for flips, a compartment for fitteds, a smaller compartments for hemp doublers, a compartment for backup prefolds, second choice fitteds, and extra microfiber inserts.

We keep nighttime diapers on a shelf above the dresser so DH knows what to put on her.

All next size up diapers are in a basket on the other walll.

Oh and we wash every other day-and stuff as soon as the shells are dry (line dry) and put right back in the drawer immediately- we only have one stash to really work from.

  • Thank you to all of you who have shared there secrets with me.. I Think i am going to stuff them ahead of time so it is easier on DH. I Just need more room in my dresser/changing table.. I also need a whole lot more of diapers if i am going to survive cloth diapering full time.. Wow after looking at how many you have compared to my 15 tops..

I know folks who get by with 20-25. A lot of times people HAVE a lot, but only 12 or so are used in heavy rotation. Kind of like clothes -- don't you find yourself reaching for the same tops over and over?

I bought my "stash" this weekend, and it includes/will include a dozen pockets or AIOs (with inserts), plus a dozen prefolds and three covers. Until now I've been making do with two covers and diaper service prefolds.  I figure once I switch to self-cloth-ing, a dozen diapers plus a dozen prefolds should get me through a day, if not two. Since I don't plan to CD while we're out, I think that'll be enough.

  • I have to separate my diapers because DH gets pissed when he can't find one he likes.  DD is in our room for the time being so space is limited.  I have a small dresser I use for her.  On top I keep a basket of prestuffed pockets, a container of sposie wipes, and a container of washcloths and spray (DH is starting to like cloth wipes).  In the top drawer I have all of my PFs, fitteds, and covers.   I try to keep the longies in her PJ drawer.

My laundry room is right off the bedroom so after I change her (on my bed) I drop the dirty dipe in the laundry room where I keep the trash can with pail liner.  (We have an old shot gun house).

I have 30 BG well loveds with 24 GMD yellow inserts that are only used at MIL's.  I bought her a hanging wetbag that I bring home every other day.  After I do laundry I stuff the old pockets for MIL and put them in a bag to take back.  I also take all of those at the beginning of the week so that IF/(when) DH forgets to bring them home she has plenty for an extra day.

My diapers hang to dry on my inside rack.  I usually leave them there until I do another load of laundry (when I need the rack again) and then I get motivated to put them away.  I stuff the pockets with hemp inserts right away and add an extra layer of MF for 2 of them and then set them aside for night time.

I did not realize how complicated my storage system was, sorry.

  • I use his dresser as his changing table.  One side has diapers, the other side clothes.  I stuff the diapers after washing and sort them by type.  90% of my diapers are FB and BG, and I keep them separate because DH and I use different ones.  So the top drawer has snaps and the one below it aplix.  The bottom drawer is for fitteds and covers (I only have a few, these are our overnight diapers) and extra inserts/liners/wipes.  I keep a stack of cloth wipes on the dresser and a peri bottle full of wipe solution.  We (DH) also use disposable wipes so those are up there, too.
