What do you call your IL's?

I just got off the phone with SIL (DH's brothers wife) and she was called our IL's Mom and Dad. I was speechless at first, then asked, "what did you call them?" Her and BIL have only been married for less than a year and this is only her second time to visit the IL's. I just found it funny and wanted to get some feedback, maybe I am the weird one who does not do this.

Re: What do you call your IL's?

  • I call my ILs Mom and Dad at times and sometimes their names.
Mom of 3 (Ginny 4 yrs old), (Miles 2 yrs old), and (Mason due June 15th)

  • My IL's are Mom and Dad to me...but we visit multiple times a week and have a standing Sunday night dinner at their house.
  • I know plenty of people who do call their ILs "mom and dad," so I don't think it's weird that your SIL did so. I don't think it matters how long they've been married, if that's what she wants to call them.

Personally, I call them mine by their first names, as that's just my comfort level. I'm quite close with them, but it just feels more natural to me.

  • I call them by first name.  When we write cards to them, we write "mom" and "dad" because it's from both of them.  When they talk about DH and I, they refer to us as their kids and FIL has more than once mentioned that I'm his daughter and not an in-law.

  • First names.

It's weird though. DH and I started dating when we were 15, so they were Mr. and Mrs. X for a long time, but when we got married, they asked me to call them by first names.

I'd never call anyone but my own parents Mom and Dad.

  • Mostly Mom and Dad, but very rarely their names.

  • My SIL calls our ILs mom and dad, I call them by their names.  She has been married to my Hs brother for a lot longer then we have been and I'm just not comfortable with it, it feels awkward to me.

  • The thing I found funny, was that she was referring to them as Mom and Dad to me. I do not call them that, and she knows that. She can call them what ever she wants, I agree with that.

  • Nana and Grandpa, because that's what DD calls them.  Before she was born I called them by their first names.

DH and I have been married for 7 years, and I was surprised how fast she felt comfortable with calling them Mom and Dad. To each their own, I guess.

  • My husband and I each call our in-laws by their first names. I don't think calling them Mom and Dad is really weird, I just never have.
  • I didn't meet my inlaws until after DH and I got married, and for me they were so kind and welcoming I had no problem calling them Mom and Dad right off the bat. Plus I grew up hearing my parents call their inlaws mom and dad so it was kind of something I expected.

This exactly; I am very close to my parent's and I feel sort of like I'm disrespecting them by calling someone else Mom and Dad.

  • I call them Momma ____ and Poppa_____ (their last name)

I used to call them Mr & Mrs ____ out of habit (I was raised to call my friends parents Mr & Mrs) but then as hubby and I got more serious, and then married, they became Momma and Poppa.  I don't think I could call them Mom & Dad to their face, since that's what I call my parents, however I do refer to them that way to my hubby. Like if he gets of the phone with them, i'll say "what are mom & dad up to?"

When the baby is here I will probably start calling them Nana & Papa as that's what he will call them.

Dh's dad passed away before we met, but I'm sure I would call him by his first name.  Dh calls my parents by their first names.

  • Mom & Dad.  I started calling them that on our wedding day.  They indicated that they would be honored if I called them that.  Their son-in-law (their only other child-in-law) calls them by their first names.  But they are practically like parents to me, so it feels very comfortable.  It was weird the first few times, but I got through it.  :)

  • I don't ever call them mom and dad when I am talking to them but I write it when I am filling out card or something of course since it would be from DH also.  I just call them by their first names..If FIL is telling me something about MIL or vice versa they say mom or dad though.  I'm pretty close with them but my mom would die if I called MIL mom lol.
