I think it's a neat name, but not in the U.S. If you're French Canadian---cool, go for it. Or if you live in Europe. But French versions of names seem to go one way in America---toward girls. I think they're seen as more feminine. I wouldn't use a French variant of a name for a boy.

That's what I was thinking. I like it, but I think people would automatically assume it was a girl's name here in the states. That's why I wouldn't use it.
It just seems romantic to me, if that makes sense. Of course, romantic names rarely go over well IRL.

I don't even begin to know how to pronounce French, but it looks like it would sound cool ..would probably be a little too "weird" for me to ever consider it, tho.

It's ok. If you're living in France or Quebec, I'd totally say go for it but if not, it would never go over well. I knew a French guy in high school with this name. He was a sweetheart so I automatically think of him! I wouldn't use it though. Even if, I happen to have a VERY French last name, my husband IS French, and we live in Canada and speak French on a daily basis. It's just TOO French.

I know the nicest man named Etienne. Of course (like PPs stated), he lives in France. I loved the name ever since I met him, but I don't think we could pull it off (especially in the area we live). I think a lot of ppl here would think it's a girl's name.
I probably wouldn't use it(and it's too "out there" for DH's tastes), but it's a nice name, and has the advantage of being unique without being "youneek."
The first person/character that came to mind for me was Etienne Navarre, from Ladyhawke.
I like it ok. I grew up in Canada, so I've always been familiar with the name, though usually just through my French text books since I lived in English-speaking Canada.
It makes me think of a school I used to supply in - Sir Georges Etienne Cartier. I disliked the school, but I will try not to hold that against the name.
I like Etienne - probably because I had a good friend with this name. He was from Puerto Rico and was so nice....I remember when I met him I had a really hard time pronouncing and remembering his name - then I thought of "ATM" and that helped me

Etienne, however, is not Ethan. It's Stephen.
