Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Breastfeeding

My baby usually only feeds for about 10 minutes total.  It seems as though he is getting enough to eat since he usually goes 2/5-3 hours between feedings, but it still worries me.  Why doesn't he eat for longer?  Could it be that I just make a lot of milk?  Because when I pump for 5 or 10 minutes, I will usually get around 4 oz, sometimes more.

Re: Breastfeeding

  • You probably just have a fast letdown. As long as he is gaining weight and happy, it's not an issue.

  • Baby can get more milk, more quickly than a pump.  I wouldn't worry, as long as he has the right amt of dirty diapers.
  • Lance eats between 5 and 7 minutes typically, he's gaining great and is satisfied for 3-5 hours during the day and 7-9 hours at night.  Count yourself lucky!  ;0)

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
  • The amount you pump doesn't necessarily reflect how much milk LO is getting.  Babies are more efficent at getting the milk out.  As long as baby doesn't show signs of hunger or has a decent amount of wet dipes, then everything should be just fine.

however long the night, dawn will break.

  • I agree with pp's, as long as you are getting enough diapers and weight gain... I would consider yourself lucky!! My DD tsometimes takes 40min on one side!!! I dread the nighttime feeding because they take so long!! :)

  • You just have a lot of milk and what seems to be a fast let down so he's most likely content. But as long as his weight is fine, you're good.
