Minnesota Babies

Some new mommy questions

Hi ladies! We were placed with our son Harry on Sunday at 2 days old. We got back to MN yesterday. In the hotel on the road, he slept with us (which I love), but it's not practical here at home. So tonight I am promising myself I will put him the cradle.

BUT I am worried he is going to be too cold or too hot. What do your infants wear in the winter at night? We used to keep our house at 68 but turned it up to 70 since he came home. He'll be in a cradle right next to our bed.

Edited to add a link to pictures I took today, because I am an AW when it comes to him!

Re: Some new mommy questions

  • Those pictures are priceless! So cute! My LO is almost 11 months old. So last winter and so far this winter, he's been in fleece pjs or when he was smaller a fleece sleep sack.

  • Congrats!!! What a sweetie :) We do fleece PJ's. My July baby is still small enough to swaddle, so we do that, with an oversized receiving blanket. You could do that, or use a sleep sack or swaddle me. Ours likes to be pretty warm, so we also wrap another blanket around her. Those little mittens can help with cold hands too. They don't usually need a ton...their own body heat keeps them pretty warm naturally.

  • Awww, congrats on your babe!  Love the pictures, mine has the same hairy forehead ;)

I'm still a brand new mommy, but our LO sleeps in fleece footy PJs and in a fleece sleep sack.  He was only 6 pounds when he came home and loves to be toasty warm!

Oh, good to know! Thank you. Where is your LO sleeping?

  • I am so happy you are over here now. Aiden was swaddled so he would have fleece (or cotton if we had the heat turned up a little more) footies & his Fleece Halo Sleep sack w/wings.

I sent you a email all about the Halo Sleep Sack did you happen to get it? I know you are busy.

  • Our little guy slept in a long sleeve onesie and a fleece sleep sack.  I really liked the gerber kimona style onesie with mittens.  It helped keep his hands warm.  We had a really hard time getting him to sleep in his crib and bassinet, so at times he slept in the swing.  When we slept there he slept in a fleece pj.

    Best of luck!  he's adorable!

  • DD wore footie pjs and was swaddled in a flannel receiving blanket last winter.  She was in a bassinet in our room, we kept the house between 70-72 and ran the ceiling fan on low.

Keeping the room cool and a fan on helps prevent SIDS.  Also, his little hands will feel cold, but it won't bother him.  Babies that young don't have great circulation yet, so their extremities feel cold.

    Congrats!

  • Hi mommy!! Those new pictures are so adorable.

When Greta was little we used a fleece Halo sleep sack with the swaddle wings. She would usually fight the swaddle but once she was tightly wrapped she was fine and it helped her sleep longer. I liked the Halo sleep sacks because they had a really tight swaddle as compared to just swaddling in a receiving blanket or a Kiddopatamus wrap- which she could get out of. We bought the same Halo sack that they used in the hospital and at the hospital they would just have her in a long sleeved onesie and the sleep sack. When we got home we usually had her in a gown, thin sleeper, or long sleeved onesie and then the Halp swaddle sack. I liked the gowns best because they made diaper changes easier. The best temperature to prevent SIDS is 61-68 degrees so we usually keep her room around 66-68 degrees. We also use a fan in the room which is supposed to circulate the air and help for preventing SIDS. Greta still sleeps in a sleep sack and a sleeper with no blankets.

I have a cream Halo swaddle sleep sack that has only been washed once that you can borrow if you want. It has the hospital embroidered in one corner if you don't mind but is just like the ones they sell at BRU.

  • Absolutely adorable! Congratulations on your new bundle!

When M was that little he loved to be swaddled. Now he sleeps in footie pjs (fleece or cotton) & a fleece sleep sack. We keep the house ar 70.

  • I also really liked the fleece Halo swaddle sleep sack that PP have talked about, we got it in the hospital.  But he already doesn't like being swaddled!

Right now we have him sleeping in the Fisher Price Rock N Play right next to our bed.  We also bought a sleep positioner for our bed, so he can sometimes sleep in between us :)

  • Sleep Sacks! Both of my boys used them and we loved them!

Does Harry swaddle? That would keep him plenty warm.

For DS2, we had a Snuggle Nest (https://www.babydelight.com/products/snuggle_nest/deluxe/) and it worked great. Kept DS between us for easy access and helped to transition him to the crib.

  • Last winter, when Annie was a newborn, we did footie pjs and a swaddle (Miracle Blanket or the velcro ones). This winter we've been doing fleece footies and a little blanket.
  • My DD is almost 3 months old and we've been using the fleece halo sleepsack since it got chilly. She likes to be snuggly so in addition to the gown we have her in, we put a summer swaddle blanket on and then the sleep sack. This helps since our house is a little chilly. She tends to sleep a bit longer if she's warmer.

  • Everyone has great suggestions. One thing to keep in mind is that the baby's head releases the most heat. Leave a stocking on the top of Harry's head to keep him warm at night :) Swaddle and snuggle are my 2 favorite S's, but when it is your turn to sleep...lay him near you for easy access for those late night feedings I used a bassinet).

Great Pictures btw...you're giving me lovely ideas :)

  • We put our 5 months old in any regular footie PJs and swaddle her so her hands stay warm, and then we put a regular blanket around her. She sleeps in her crib at the end of our bed, we also keep the house at around 70 degrees, sometimes 68 at night because ti tends to get warm in our bedroom at night, good luck hope it helps.
