Introducing Bottle...help!

Hello all,

We've been trying to introduce a bottle for about 2 weeks now. LO took to it twice, once with me and the other with the hubby. Since then, he hasn't taken the bottle at all.

We've tried putting milk around the tip of the nipple, me leaving the room for hubby to feed him, me staying and trying to sooth him as he eats with hubby, me feeding him the bottle, trying to trick him into thinking it's my breast, feeding him when he's not very hungry, feeding him when he's hungry, putting our fingers on either side of the nipple so he feels the skin contact with his cheeks as he would if he were BF, etc.

 Any suggestions?

Re: Introducing Bottle...help!

  • I had the same issue.  I think that persistence is key.....keep trying!  I thought my LO would NEVER take the bottle and now it is going well.  We had to try different bottles, I really think it's a nipple preference for some LOs.  We have had success with Dr. Brown's.  I had to be the first to give her the bottle, facing out.  Now she can be held any way, but facing out seemed to help.  Also, when DH tried for the first time, she protested but he held her out as well and walked around as he fed her and that worked too.  I think you just have to be creative!  Oh, and try to warm the milk up so that it's not cold, I think this helped as well.  good luck!

  • We only had a little trouble getting DS to take a BM bottle. He will take it from DH (I've never tried to give it to him) but DH has to put his whole hand on DS's cheek. That's the only suggestion I have. Good luck!

  • What is he doing? Not sucking? Sucking but then acting fussy? Have you tried different bottles? I had to try 4 or 5 different types of bottles before I found something my DD would take (playtex nurser)

  • I had the same issue, she finally took the playtex latex nipple.  Try not holding your LO and give the bottle...I left my DD in her bouncer and she took it.  Also try putting the nipple in your bra, then it will be warm and smell like you...it worked for us anyway.  So sorry for you, I feel your pain, keep trying it'll happen eventually!

  • He's just crying and not taking the bottle. I'm going to try all the suggestions you ladies have offered. Let's hope they work! Thanks!!!!!
