Babies: 0 - 3 Months

diaper rash question

My baby is 6 days old and has awful diaper rash. I think its due to him pooping every 2 to 3 hours and that and all the wipes are really irritating his bottom. We change him at least every two hours and as soon as we can tell he's pooped, so he's not sitting in a dirty diaper. We have been using desitin for the past two days, but its not helping at all. I have a drs appointment for him tomorrow but would like to know if there's any other quick reliefs to help him out today? And, is it normal for him to poop so much? He's ff and the poo is yellow and pasty and sometimes a little runny. Thanks!

Re: diaper rash question

  • are you BFing? A BF baby usually poops every time they eat at first. My son had a horrible rash the first week. We used Aquaphor, it cleared up a little, when we saw his pedi, he said put neosporn on 3x/day and aquaphr with every other diaper. It cleared up in a few days

  • I use desitin also, but DD has never had anything awful, just some redness. I have also heard Aquaphor works well as PP said. You could also try using cloth wipes just wet with warm water which may be less irritating? GL!

  • Our doctor recommended cloth wipes and to alternate between Vaseline and Penatin with each diaper change, It cleared up pretty quick!
  • We cloth diaper, but this may work for you. After I wipe his bottom with a wet wipe, I pat it dry with a soft flannel cloth. I put lanolin on his bottom after his bath at night to help keep him dry overnight.

  • there is an ointment called PINXAV (pronounced pink-salve). it has at 20% more concentration of zinc oxide in it (which is what heals). i SWEAR by it. and a tube is around 5$. go to their website cuz it's not widely available. GL

  • We use butt paste but our pedi said to buy mylanta don't shake it and pour off the water you'll have a white paste left in the bottle he said that white paste is the best stuff for a diaper rash!! I guess all the magnessuim and other stuff in it is great for would healing!!
  • We use A&D and it seems to clear up faster.

  • DS has had a rash for 3 weeks.  The firs time we went to the pedi at 8 days, she told us not to use Desitin or zinc oxide. Some babies have super sensitive skin, and both will make it worse. We were also told not to use wipes(thankfully, we have a sink in DS' room. We need to make sure he is completely dry before applying Aquafor or A&D(the ORIGINAL--which does not contain zinc oxide).  We just went to the pedi again yesterday, because he was still having really bad rash days. He is now on an antibiotic for every other diaper change. We now blowdry his butt(on the low and coolest setting). It is now clearing up! PHEW, and he likes the cool air on his tush.

Good luck! It is super frustrating when you think you are doing everything right, and it just gets worse.:(

  • My daughter had a horrible rash a few weeks ago and I tried many different things and after a week I tried Lansinoh cream and used a washcloth with warm water instead of baby wipes - worked wonders within one day! I also let her have some nappy free time each day for as long as she was comfortable.
  • Thanks again for the advice.. we took him to the Dr today and he has a yeast infection. She gave us a rx for nystatin so hopefully it will clear up soon. He's already not crying while being wiped!
