Babies: 3 - 6 Months

RP: Dd has milk protein allergy :(

Just found out today at her 4 month checkup..... It's been 3 weeks of mucusy stools which progressed to blood and mucus. She's been way fussier than normal, and wanting to nurse every hour for about the past 2 weeks. In spite of such frequent feedings, she's not gaining weight :(

Her pedi advised me to stop nursing immediately and pump for the next two weeks while I go dairy/cow product free. She put her on nutrimigen to help get her weight up, and says I can resume nursing her as normal after the 2 weeks that I'm totally cow-free.

I'm having a hard time, I want my daughter to be healthy but I'm also worried about my supply. I have a medela PISA, and plan to pump every 2 hours, take more milk plus, and freeze the milk I get in the deep freeze for use after she's 1yr (as long as she outgrows the allergy).

For those of you going through this, did your pedi reccomend the same thing? Do I really have to stop nursing her for the full two weeks?

  • DD also has a milk protein allergy but I am not nursing. Cheer up! Your LO will be fine, it's very common and drs know how to treat it. DD is on Similac Alimentum and she's doing fine, good luck!

  • I never knew FS one had the allergy until I tried weaning & starting cow milk. He was fine nursing, & outgrew the allergy at 3.5 yrs

  • When the pedi suggested I remove dairy from my diet and later the GI suggested I remove soy, nuts, fish, and eggs, they told me to continue breastfeeding.

Your plan would seem to have the positive that it would clear DD's system sooner I would think.

  • My daughter was also diagnosed at a little over 4 months. The ped said to cut out all milk, it still continuted past the 2 week point, so I cut out all soy, and scheduled an appt with a pedi GI.  The GI doc said that the benefits of BF still outweigh the small amt of blood loss, etc... so she said to continue BF even if I still see an occasional flec.  If you don't want to quit BF, I'd get a second opinion for your situation.  Good luck!!!
  • We just found out the same thing yesterday.  :(

BUT we were told to stop the dairy but that we could continue BF.  Honestly, I wouldn't stop.  I'm too afraid that once we go to BF again that DS won't want to.

Weird advice.  Did  you check kellymom?  Or LLLs site?

  • I was told by a pedi gi to just give DS alimentum b/c breastmilk was making him fat and uncomfortable due to his allergy so I got a second opinion from an allergist. The allergist said to keep ebf and cut out dairy and soy. I'd keep with ebf as long as you can. Just keep in mind, 80% of kids with a dairy allergy have a soy one as well.

  • DS was diagnosed at 3 months; he is now almost 6 months and doing great! I was told to stop eating diary and we tried a 3-day trial of Nutrimagen but LO would not drink it.....went to BF/pumped milk without dairy around a day after and there were no problems.

I wouldn't give up the BF even if it is for a short period of time.
