water broke but stalled contractions?!

My water broke last night around 9:30pm, contractions started steadily around 11pm at 7-8 min apart then 3-5min but i got up and took a shower and then they just fizzled out.  I don't really feel them unless i'm lying down and even then, they're not consistent.  I'm trying for a VBAC and don't want to go into the hospital yet but how long is it ok to wait?  I haven't called the Dr yet and my mother and husband are not being very supportive; they are stressing me out about leaving to the hospital already.  My doula recommended nipple stimulation and castor oil....

Re: water broke but stalled contractions?!

  • I'm sorry and I hope things pick up!  I'm sure the stress from your DH and mom isn't helping you relax either.  Is your doula around?  I don't know if I'd bother with castor oil at this point if it were me.  Have you taken a walk yet?  I'm not sure how long I'd wait after my water broke, haven't thought about that yet, so I'm no help there!  Best of luck for a successful VBAC!

  • I tried nipple stimulation and that brought them close together, but i got tired of it and decided to try walking, then....nothing; zilch.  They pretty much went away. Now, i'm hooked up to the breast pump and that seems to be helping.  I just want to VBAC so badly.
  • First of all, good luck with your VBAC!!

It depends who you ask as to the entire how long to wait thing.  More naturally minded seem to say around 48 hours or more (although I'd venture they'd say that's with some monitoring of baby's HB & your temp).  The hospital, of course would say 24 hours between water breaking & delivery. All of this assuming you're not GBS+.

I'd keep going with the walking/nipple stimulation, etc.  Perhaps try to get calm and focus on the fact that your body can do this.  I know with VBAC (hopeful myself) that a lot of roadblocks can be emotional, and your body has a hard time going into labor if you're scared/uptight etc - a lot of those emotions can stall out labor or make you digress. Maybe work with your DH or doula to focus on the fact that your body knows what it's doing, you can trust it, etc.

I hope you have a fabulous birth experience!!  Can't wait to hear about it.  Good luck, and early congrats!!! :D

  • My water also broke and my contractions stalled. Sometimes taking a shower can stall contractions. I was given pitocin to picj it up. my mistake was going to the hospitla after water broke, but DH was so concerned and dragged me in. My water broke at 1:am thursday and I gave birth 11:pm friday. Hope it starts sooner, try doing some lunges, squats and walking.

  • hey girl, I know this is a little late...

    But...

I hope you are either in hot labor or still waiting on things to pick up. If your water was simply leaking, then stopped leaking, you might have had a high leak that sealed itself off again. About the only 'no going back' water breakage is when it is a gush that then keeps trickling after that and doesn't stop or a heavy trickle that keeps trickling after that and doesn't stop.

ELVs and happy labor/VBAC vibes :)

  • Congrats on going VBAC!!!

Stay strong, you'll get there. Your doula has some good advice but I would save castor oil as a last resort, if you can. My friend that recently did that said it works for sure but is very intense.

Ditto sage, the same friend also had a trickle kind of water breaking and it may have actually sealed up a bit. Some people can go for quite a bit with the right support. Good Luck!!!!
