Babies on the Brain

Well, at least I won't have to eat Turducken, right?

:sighs:

Probie should be here by 5pm est tonight.  They did a BPP and even though I scored a 6/8 (mostly muscle tone concerns), my ob consulted the Peri who thinks I c/s sooner rather than later is best.

Needless to say, I'm pissed (esp since Probie is busy wiggling around as we speak) but w/e, I guess.  "I'd rather have a healthy baby than an ideal birthplan" (isn't that what I'm supposed to say?)

So wish me luck, moreover, wish my nurses luck (I'm not in the best of moods right now, obviously) and any c/s advice would be greatly appreciated.

SP or MrsWhite will update later, I'm trying to keep it off FB (unless I change my mind, lol) because I don't want a crowd at the hospital or my phone going nuts.

  • I'm sorry you are not getting the birth you wanted. But this is so exciting!

    Good luck!

  • I'm sorry your birthplan isn't going to happen, but I'm happy Probie will be here safe and healthy very soon. ((hugs))

Advice - bring a travel neck pillow to the hospital. It is so much more comfortable to sleep sitting up a bit for a few days. Lying down pulls on the incision. Also, as soon as they let you up make sure to move around. Take little walks every hour or two. If you let yourself get stiff you'll be doing the c-section shuffle for much longer than necessary. Good luck!

  • Good luck!  Did they say why a c-section?  And I hope to God it's not so your delivery doesn't screw up anyone's turkey day plans.
  • Sorry you aren't going to have the birth you planned on, but you will forget everything as soon as you see that gorgeous little face.

  • Were you originally going to have a c/s? Sorry the plan didn't work out...but yay for a birthday!

I am in L&D and I had a c/s, and my advice would be to 1) stay away from carbonated drinks until you're up & around w/o assistance; 2) don't over-do it when you're able to walk the halls on the second day post-op b/c you ALWAYS hurt worse on Day #2 (twice a shift should suffice); and 3) don't be afraid of taking pain meds. If your meds aren't cutting it, don't be afraid to request something stronger.

I had a c/s. It was not what I had hoped or planned on, but it was fine. Everything went very well and the recovery was fine.

Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving. I will be looking for updates!

They did the BPP and his muscle tone wasn't what they wanted (even though his HR, cord flow, fluid levels, respiratory functions and etc were good).

They said that the poor muscle tone, combined with my "unfavorable cervix" (um dudes--I'm only 39 weeks, it's not like I'm an overripe melon) and my weight (which, has NEVER come up until today---my bp has been spot on this entire time, my GTT was textbook and I've measured spot on this entire pregnancy) leaves them to think he'd have a hard time handling "long hard labor".

The U/S woman was the first this entire pregnancy to give me a weight estimate..8lb7oz.  We'll see how accurate that is, eh?

I hope for a great delivery for you, and I am excited, yay for probie! nothing but the best for you and probie, balls. : )

I am having a hard time liking this plan b/c it sounds like they don't want you interfering w/their holiday...You can always request that you have a trial labor, and you can even have the BPP repeated--esp now that he's awake & moving...

  • Will they even let you have a trial of labor?  Do you want that?  They could help your cervix along with cytotec or cervadil before they induce all while monitoring baby to make sure he is doing OK.  Obviously if things aren't looking right they would do a c-section.   It sounds like your cervix ripening agenda would interfere with their turkey.
  • Same as PP's... It sucks that you're not going to get the birth plan you wanted and expected, but it's awesome that Probie will be here! I'll think good thoughts for you tonight!

  • Mrswhite said the same thing and I've been going back and forth on it.  On one hand, I want it to be over with.  On the other hand, I really don't want a c/s.

I also hate that I've become that mom who wants a, but is cowering to b because she doesn't want to be the woman who ends up hurting the baby because of her "plan".  I hate that there is no cut and dry solution, ykwim?

On one hand, I could go in there, repeat a bpp, be put on cervidil overnight, then pit in the morning, potentially having a happy healthy baby naturally or potentially putting him through labor for no reason.

On the other hand, I could go in there, just give in to the c/s, end up with a baby tonight without having put him through the stress of the whole thing.

I really am at a loss.  I always swore I'd not let him induce me because of t-day, but I never thought he'd go in and say (with some actual "Reason") "c/s!"

He's not even the one doing it (which doesn't really bother me that much), it's the peri..so I can't even say it's him trying to get out of working on thanksgiving.

  • Look, it is really up to you.  This is your baby, your body, your delivery.  Your baby should be well monitored during labor and if things aren't looking well they will do a c-section.  You may end up with a c-section anyway.  Just because your cervix isn't favorable now doesn't mean they can't try and induce you because they feel you need to be delivered though.  It isn't like you have a blood pressure of 190/110 and the baby needs to come out now, or you are abrupting or something.

On the other hand, you could possibly be induced and have a perfectly smooth induction and delivery.  If it is something you are considering you can at least ask and talk it through with them.

  • I agree with bens and Lambie.  I think they are using scare tactics to section you before the holiday.

I had an unexpected section and it wasn't really that bad.  I was up and showering unassisted 12 hours later.

Take the pain meds and stay on top of them.  At my hospital you have to request your drugs every single time, I would forget and they wouldn't remind me.

Move around as soon as you can but don't overdo it.

I will address some breastfeeding things since I know how much you want to be successful at it.

Having a c section can delay your milk coming in.  It's important to get the baby to the breast ASAP in recovery.  Find out if they have baby stay with you in recovery or take him to the nursery.  Even if it's standard to take the baby away, request for him to stay with you.

If they do take him to the nursery, make CERTAIN they do not give him any formula or sugar water.  If it means that your DH has to leave you, and stay with him then do that.   If he is taken to the nursery I would go so far as to tape a sign on his crib that says no formula. If for some reason he has to have formula (like blood sugar reasons) do not allow them to give it via a bottle.

Do skin to skin as soon as possible (in recovery) and often. It will help bring your milk in.  Also bring him to the breast every 2 hours around the clock.  If he is in nursery, don't assume they will bring him to you to nurse.  Have your husband go get him and bring him to you.  Your milk comes in because you stimulate it to.  It won't come in on it's own.

Also, both you and baby will retain a lot of fluids, so his birth weight will be inflated.  It's very common for induced and sectioned babies to loose a lot of weight in the hospital because of this.  Ten percent weight loss is not uncommon.  Ruby lost 12oz by the time we left the hospital, and gained it all back in a week.  Don't let them convince you that you need to supplement with formula until your milk comes in.  Colostrum is all he needs.  Same thing with jaundice.  Nurse nurse nurse.

    Good luck!

Exactly! Balls, it IS totally your call. My mom (also an OB nurse for many years), is echoing both Lambie & myself. If you're uncomfortable, I'd request another BPP, or even an induction before a c/s. The baby is obviously not stressed enough to come out NOW (via c/s), or you'd already be in the hospital, having a c/s.

    I totally & 100% agree with Lambie.

ETA: I also think they're scaring you. 6/8 also doesn't always warrant delivery NOW...esp if the baby is sleepy or something.

  • The peri's performing the c/s and he's the one who said you needed a c/s? Sounds like he's the one who doesn't want the holiday interfered with.

I'm going to be honest with you-- I had an elective induction with DD and I was sad afterward that I didn't let myself go into labor on my own. I felt like I didn't *really* experience labor. I went so far as to tell my OB when I got pregnant the second time not to induce me no matter what (within reason). If you really don't want to be induced, tell them that. Tell them you will submit to additional screenings, whatever they want, but you're not going in for an unnecessary induction.

:::hugs::: I hope you're able to enjoy whichever way he's born!

  • Could you request to wait a few days, have another BPP and re-evaluate?  If you're not showing any signs of labor and the concern is how Probie would tolerate labor, why does he have to come out now?  I could see the sense of urgency if he's not doing well inside, but it kinda doesn't sound like that's really the case...??

  • If you read this just know it comes from someone that went through 4 days of labor (induced) and then a c/s all before 36 weeks due to a health concern.

They admitted me at 35 weeks2 days to be induced due to a health issue with me and the baby. After a few days they were going to send me home after bringing me in ASAP. I had several nurses really pressuring me to go home despite being mid induction. I asked if the baby would be ok if I went home and waited and they said "hopefully". That was not good enough. I ended up with a c/s in the end but I can say that I tried every option I had with a clear mind. We cried over the whole thing, didn't know what to do and probably felt a lot like you do. Looking back the peace of mind that I do have from it all is that I stuck to my gut. I had one doctor that told me "this is your baby and your body and if you don't want to go home they can't make you". Just that one opinion was enough for me to do what felt right. Sure, I had a c/s in the end but that was ok at that point.

There are many many ways to monitor the baby through induction. I'm not understanding why they won't let you go into labor naturally if there's no health concern and baby is fine in there. You're not even 40 weeks yet. I would do whatever you are comfortable with and go with your gut. C/S does not sound necessary and I wonder if they'd be pushing it if this was Friday and not the day before Thanksgiving. Normally i'm all for listening to the docs opinion but in this situation with the info given it sounds like they're making a pretty harsh decision for a c/s today when nothing is really wrong. Do what feels right to you. There are internal monitors for the baby and so many other things they can do do make sure baby is ok during the process.

Hugs to you, I look back and sort of regret what happened and I only said all this to try and help. I'm excited to meet Probie when you and him are ready for his entrance. :) I'm sorry you have such a tough decision to make.
