Prevacid mommies come in

Lo was recently switched from Zantac to Prevacid for her AR. The Zantac was in liquid form, and we would give it to her with a 1ml dropper. However, this new med is a tablet that needs to be dissolved in water. Then given in a dropper. Once the tablet dissolves, it looks like the "beads" inside of a capsule pill. The beads tend to stay in the syringe while the water gets spit out. The doctor told us she should have this med 20 minutes before food, so we can't just put it in some milk. I feel like she's not getting the full dose because what does make it out of the syringe she spits out. What do you do?

  • Our pharmacy dissolves it for us.  I guess we're lucky.  As far as keeping her from spitting it out - aim for her top back molar, and give it to her a little at a time.  DD takes 2 ml, and I usually give it to her in 4-5 pieces.

  • We were told to dissolve it in her milk.  So I pump for her morning feeding and dissolve the pill in there.
  • Ask your pharmacy for the 3ML syringes. They're a needle syringe and our pharmacy removes the needle for us. put the tablet in the syringe then the dropper. Pull in some hot water and some air so you have room to mix. Once it's dissolved pull in some cold water. As you're giving it kind of shake the syringe to fill the bottom w/ the capsules. You have to do it kind of quickly because the little beads can clog the syringe but it's the way I've found that works the best.

This is what we do, only I actually use the syringe from a bottle of Gripe water because it has a bigger opening.  DD has gotten better about drinking from the syringe.  She used to spit it out but now she actively drinks it.  If you are having trouble go slow and aim for the back of the cheek.  It is hard not to swallow if you put it there.

  • Our pedi told us to dissolve it in her bottle.  We've been doing it that way for 4.5 mos. and it works fine.  We use Born Free Variable Flow nipples to make sure she gets it all out.

  • Our pedi told us to wash our hands really well and hold it up against the inside of his cheek until it dissolves (he takes half a tablet twice a day). We typically let him suck on our finger or follow with a paci to make sure he swallows the medicine. The brand name pill dissovles really well, but our last refill was switched to the new generic and it dissolves in much bigger "beads". Overall, Prevacid has done wonders for improving DS's AR and he seems to have no trouble taking it.

  • I'm a pediatric nurse and give a lot of Prevacid.  One way that works well is to put it in a small cup/bowl (we use a medicine cup) with a little bit of water or milk/formula.  You can use a spoon to stir and then give it with the spoon.  That way, you get all the beads and don't have to fight with them stuck to the syringe.
