Math help...my brain hurts

I'm making a quilt for DD and its finished size on the front will be 91.6 inches by 91.6 inches (full size/queen size) based on the square size.

How many yards of fabric do I need for the backing? I'm thinking I calculated 9 yards but that sounds like a LOT...

  • I think you'd need 6 yards of 45" wide fabric, but I'm not sure if my math is right or not, either!  I did 91.6/36 (# inches in a yard) and got 2.54.  I figure you'll need two times that much to get the width, plus some extra for the 1.6" that isn't covered by the width of the two panels of fabric (i.e. 90" = 45"x2), and always like to buy "on the safe side", so I said 6.  Though you could probably get away with 5.5 yards.  If my math is right =P

I think that sounds about right. The fabric is 42" wide and after I trim off the edge I would guess about 40 inches. And its directional fabric if that helps. That is why I was thinking 9 yards, but I bed I could get away with 6 yards plus an extra yard and a half to cut to fit the rest. Yes?
