Success after IF

Anyone ever have an Ectopic?

What were your betas like?

Did you have symptoms?

What causes an eptopic?

I'm going in for an u/s on Friday to rule out the possibility of an ectopic and I'm freaking out.

Last week on Wednesday my beta was 92 and today it was 1154 and because I'm 5w4d they think I could have an ectopic. My numbers started out low, but have been doubling like they should. My RE nurse totally freaked me out and told me that at this point the doubling doesn't matter so much?

Please let them see the sack in my uterus and not an ectopic.

I'm so scared.

Re: Anyone ever have an Ectopic?

  • I did and I was worried about another one when I went into the doctors at 6 weeks 1 day.  He said I would have already felt a lot of pain at my stage.  And with my ectopic my beta was 187 in the hospital.  Endometriosis is what I had that caused the ectopic.  Are you in pain?

  • I did.  My betas never doubled and were low relative to where they should have been in my pregnancy (I don't remember them, to be honest, but they were low enough that my RE thought I was having a standard m/c).  I had a dull pain on my right side, where my ectopic was, and I was bleeding (dark brown blood), so heavily it could have been a period.  They aren't sure what caused my ectopic as I had clear tubes.  My mom had one too.  I had alot of uterine polyps that might have caused it as well.
  • No, I don't really have pain. I get occasional twinges where my ovaries are, but I thought that was normal. I had a lot of follies at the time of trigger though (pcos).
  • My betas were:

    13dpo-- 17

    18dpo-- 92

    24dpo-- 1154 (today)

I had a couple brown tinged CM around my bfp, but nothing since.

  • Sorry this is long.....

I have, unfortunately had 2.  My first ectopic was after an injectable iui cycle.  In that case, I never went in for my beta because I took a hpt and it was negative and I started to spot so I figured it was over.  I ended up on the operating table about 5 weeks after that with sever cramps on my right side.  I thought it was appendicitis and had no clue I could be pregnant.  I never knew my beta levels.

prior to that fiasco, I was unexplained.  After it though it was obvious that I may have tubal issues.  the pathology of that tube said that there was nothing wrong and the RE chalked it up to bad luck.  We decided after that to wait 3 months and start IVF.

We did IVF in March 2008, my first beta at 11dp3dt was 16 then 2 days later it was 153, and then 532.  At first we thought that maybe this had a chance.  Then the spotting started and my beta started to level off.  The next was 890.  And then when we went for an ultrsound when my levels were over 1000 and we could not see anything in the uterus or anywhere else for that matter.  Because I was so closely monitored, I was not in any pain or anything.  I received a shot of methotrexate to dissolve the pregnancy where ever it was.

No one knows what causes an ectopic.  It could be bad luck, it could be that the cilia in the tubes is microscopically damaged and they can not move the fertilized egg along, etc.  I though my chances of an ectopic with IVF were smaller but not so much.  Apparently, they embryo can travel up into the tubes while it is hanging around waiting to implant.

Doubling matters, however, there are girls on here with doubling betas on the low end where everything ended up fine and then you have stories like mine where it did not.  Your best bet is getting in to get a scan as soon as you can.  I am sorry you  are going through this!

  • I did.  It was a pregnancy that we conceived on our own.  My levels started out at an 8.  Two days later it was a 20.  They doubled as they should have for about 2 weeks and then my betas started to fall (and I started bleeding)  But they would never go completely down to zero - they would fall and then rise again.  After two weeks of that, my RE made me come in for the meth. shot only to find a huge mass in my tubes.  I had emergency surgery that day - it was a Saturday to remove the mass.  I was around 8 weeks at that point.
BFP#1 ended in a D&C 1/18/08 --- BFP#2 ended in ectopic with lap 4/2008---BFP#3 resulted in our beautiful twin boys born 3/6/2009! Lilypie Third Birthday tickers
  • Thanks for your responses. The soonest they could get me in was this Friday. The waiting is the worst part.
  • I got PG on a natural cycle.  At 16dpo I was 48, at 18dpo I was 224.  They thought everything was fine till 5w2d when I had EXCRUCIATING flank pain - that was the rupture.  I went in for my 5w3d u/s and no sac was found, but lots of fluid around my ovary.  My beta on that day was 778 (stopped doubling).  I'm a weird case b/c I never ever bled, my betas rose well at first, and I ruptured pretty early.  However, I knew from a lap that my tubes were less than stellar and probably should have insisted on closer monitoring.

I'm sorry you have to wait so long to get your u/s.  You'd think with a suspected ectopic they'd bring you in ASAP, right?

  • Yea, you'd think. The RE nurse just said that the DR wanted me to come in this week for an u/s to rule it out, because it could be ectopic with how my betas have been. Great....thanks for freaking me out! However, the nurse is one to say things in a way that isn't very sincere, but rather scary instead.

I wish I knew the odds for this being an ectopic vs. non-ectopic. Are ectopics rare?

  • I went through this two weeks ago.  My betas were rising, but with a doubling time of around 60 hours.  The doctor pretty much told me flat out that this was an ectopic pregnancy and not to get my hopes up.  They brought me in for an ultrasound and low and behold the little bean was right where it was supposed to be!

I was totally freaked out before my ultrasound, and i couldn't quite figure out was my doctor was so sure it was ectopic.  But i guess i would rather them be overly cautious than letting something potentially dangerous continue.

Good Luck this week.  Have Faith that everything will be alright!

  • I have, but this was prior to IF and I had not yet made it to my OB for betas before I discovered it, I was 6-7 weeks.  I did not have any symptoms, I had a distinct lack of symptoms in comparison to my first pregnancy but didn't really worry about that, it was really revealed to me when I started bleeding- I wiped blood one day, then started gushing blood the next.  I went in for a sono and they found a mass of tissue in one of my tubes, the baby never made it to the right spot.

Ps My OB told me that shoulder pain is a common symptom but I never had it.

    GOOD LUCK!!
