Advice Needed: CPS situation

My FI has a few bad eggs in his family. His mom informed me that his cousin, T, somehow hookedup with a pimp and was going to prostitute herself out. At the last minute she decided not to and the guy ended up stealing all of her clothes and belongings. She was staying with their other cousin, M, and put her and M's family in danger. Turns out M's teenage son walked in on T crushing up unisom and putting it in her sons' bottles (they are 2 and 1 yrs old). M kicked her out and the boy's dad called the police and came to get them.

I am beyond livid that she did this. She could have killed her boys. She is so selfish; she wanted them to go to sleep so she could go out.

All I know is that the police were called, does that automatically mean CPS gets involved? I have to call CPS since I know this information but I have no idea how to go about it. Do I need to know her exact address? Do I need to know the father's name since he has the boys? Any information you could give me would be helpful in this situation. TIA.

  • I would just call them and give all the information you can provide. Better to be a duplicate call than none at all!

ETA: Since you're hearing it through word of mouth, they may not file anything based just on that, but they'd probably want to question the others, ie the people she was staying with.

  • I would call CPS to find out.  I'm sure they will walk you through their procedures whether you are making a formal compliant or not.

  • Oh my gosh that's awful!

I wouldn't think you'd have to know the exact address or the dad's name...I say just call them anyway and let them know what you found out.  If they need additional information, you can always find that info out and call them back again.

Good for you for calling CPS though!  Those poor kids need to be removed from that awful situaiton.  I can't even believe that...just awful...

  • If the police were called, then CPS is most likely involved now too.  Police are mandated to report child abuse cases.  But, like the PP said, a duplicate call certainly wouldn't hurt the matter.  I hope everything turns out ok for everyone and those children are given the love and care they deserve.

  • Call, they will work with whatever you give them. The police will hopefully alert CPS too. The more calls they get, the better. Those babies deserve a better life.
    Effing crazy people.

You are absolutely right. From what his mom said the boys would try to crawl on her and cuddle her and she would just yell at them to get away from her. She is a really young mom too. It breaks my heart, all they want is to be loved and she can't even give that to them.
  • I would assume that if police were called and children were in the house then there might have been some communication with CPS.  I would call CPS anyway and let them know what you know and have them make the ultimate judgment call on what needs to happen next.

WTF is wrong with people. I don't care if your 10 or 99 do you not have a heart? That pisses me off. I would call because even though someone said the police were called you don't know for sure and if she is drugging her kids and neglecting them they need to be taken away.

  • I used to work with CPS (alongside, not for). Here's my two cents:

    - If police were called to the house, then CPS has almost positively been notified of the situation. Is FI's sister also in Texas? If so, then yes, all reports [to law enforcement] of suspected abuse or neglect by the child's caregiver must be forwarded on to family protective services.

    - It's still not a bad idea to follow up with CPS about the incident and concerns that you may have. However, your information is third-hand, and so they really won't be able to do much with it. What you really need to do is convince FI's mom that SHE needs to call CPS with her concerns since it sounds like she is speaking to the mom directly.

  • A friend of mine had a similar situation happen with her sister. Sister was doing drugs in front of kids, cops were called to take sister away. CPS automatically called and kids were removed, temporarily until court, then permanently after she went to jail.

Depending on which state she lives in, I believe the police automatically have to call CPS. A second call from you couldn't hurt though. If the kids were already removed, they probably already have the address, but I am sure that if she went to jail, that they have the address if you tell them that the kids belong to T.

Good luck! I am sure, especially at this time of year, this has to be a very trying time for your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  • I work for CPS the main questions they will ask is when it occured, who was there, have they done it before, the nature of the parenting, dicisplining, etc, any other safety issues. Each state is a little different, still call sometimes police dont follow through like they should. There are times police dont think its a big deal but it really is. Dont worry all reports are confidential good luck!
