Trouble TTC

Sticker shock

So I went for my FSH consultation today not knowing what to expect.  My doctor went through our gameplan again and talked about dosages.  Then he sent me to the nurse who went into more detail about what to expect with the monitoring process.  After all that, she hands me the pricing sheet. I assumed I would have to pay 50% for the ultrasounds and the meds and that would be about it, but no.  I have 4 "office visits", 4 ultrasounds and 8 lab draws (these are not covered) which all add up to just under $1K.  This does not include my meds.  Thank goodness we don't need to do IUI or that would be another $200 or so.  I pretty much burst into tears knowing we wouldn't be able to afford to do this next cycle or probably even the one after that.  I had no idea FSH cycles were so expensive.  They have their IVF prices listed on their website but nothing about their FSH cycles.   The nurse told me that these cycles have up to 70% success rates, so I realize we would only be doing a few rounds but still!  I wish I would have asked sooner about the cost so I would have been more prepared.

Thanks for letting me have my pity party.  =(

Re: Sticker shock

  • I'm so sorry.  I know exactly how you feel, since we have to wait for spring to afford our IUI.  I figured it'd be around $1800-$2k but when I saw it laid out for $2,559 I was like huh? Even more?!?

IF is not fair and to top off all the emotional sh!t you make us pay thru the nose for it? AARRGGHH!

Thanks for sympathizing.  I guess this is normal that people without full coverage have to save up.  IF totally sucks!

  • IF really sucks!  I know exactly how you feel.  I never thought getting pregnant woudl be so expensive!  My RE said we needed to go straight to IVF.  So, we went from free TTC to ridiculously expensive basically overnight.  We had some savings we were able to use to pay for IVF #1 and IVF #2.  Definitely praying that there won't be a need for any more after that!

As if not being able to get PG isn't stressful enough.  They have to add on some financial difficulties!

  • Be thankful that anything is covered.  I am 100% OOP for anything IF related including diagnostics.

I definitely understand.  My Dr wanted me to move to injectibles this month and I can't spend $2-3K right before Christmas.  So, we're waiting until the new year to look at that route.  My FSA will be gone for the whole year by the end of January!

After more than 2 years of fertility treatments, FET did the trick!
IVF March 2012 - BFP! - Severe OHSS = 8 days in the hospital in kidney failure
    No heartbeat at 10w6d
    FET August 27,2012 = BFP!
    It's a boy!
