I just read this on a website. Has anyone heard of this? Q: I used an OPK, my timing was perfect, why didn't I get pregnant?A: It often takes a number of perfectly timed cycles before pregnancy is achieved. The chances of getting pregnant each cycle varies a bit with age. If you are 20-25, your chance per cycle are about 25%. From there they begin to fall off. At 25-30 your chances are about 20%. At 30-35 they are about 15%. After 35 they may be about 10% per ovulatory cycle, and the chances continue the downward trend.This means that the average woman under 30 will get pregnant within 6 cycles. If you don't succeed after a year, it is a good idea to consult a fertility specialist. Women in their early 30s get pregnant on average by the end of 9 cycles. Mid-30s would be a year. If you are over 35, you should consult a fertility specialist if you have not achieved pregnancy within 6 months. Why 6 months when it can take a year? Because your chances of conception are lower and miscarriage rates are higher -- it is better not to waste time.

My ob/gyn told me that it takes someone my age (36) an average of 8 consecutive months of trying. She also said that infertility is defined as 12 consecutive months of trying without conception, but anymore they don't make people wait that long before sending them to an RE mainly because it's such a stressful thing for women to go through that to drag it out just makes it worse (for instance, I say we've been trying since Feb, but because of the BFP and the m/c they say May, thus the "consecutive month" statement). If I hadn't gone in with concerns about my cycle she wouldn't have given me the RE names until May of next year and I think I would have been a complete disaster by then.

I have read that there is a 20% chance on average of getting pregnant in a given cycle, so it makes sense that it would be lower if you're over 35. I think most people assume the chances are higher since we always hear about "oops" pregnancies or women who get pregnant their first month trying (like my sister with all 3 of her kids!).

In a way the stats are comforting, but at the same time when you're ready... you're ready.

I think it makes our chances sound really poor which is sad. I don't know that I believe it though. The amount of women on our board seems lows which makes me think that the majority are getting pregnant. Perhaps with help but that's ok.

So at 37, I'll be 38 next month, how many months do I TTC before I go to the doc? What doc do I go to? My gynecologist? For my last annual exam I changed from my normal nurse practitioner to an obgyn, but I didn't see the obgyn. I saw her nurse practitioner. I?m a little sad/freaked out about this. Not overly, just shocked. L

I am only a few months ahead of you with TTC. I am also 37, 38 next August. In general the rule is 6 months of TTC at our age (assuming you have well timed sex and no BFP). Are you charting? Are you ovulating? I panicked about 2 weeks ago (as I thought I was getting AF every 20 days, false alarm, I was only spotting) and called my gyn. I spoke to the nurse and the dr didn't want to see me-- go straight to the RE (reproductive endocronologist). She said no sense wasting time with them to straighten out my cycle. However I have a whole separate issue (BRCA1+) so that could be also why I was sent to the RE. I made an appt for January. I will have had 6 cycles since starting TTC by then. My insurance will cover testing but not treatment at that stage which adds another layer on this. I know you are sad and frustrated but unfortunately, it is "likely" that this process will take longer than 2 months. I was naive when I started a few months ago and thought I'd get pregnant right away and "waited" 2 months so I could time it for a June baby (summer off of work). I had no idea my plan was a really bad one! What state are you? Are you near a city with lots of choices for docs?

I am also 37, and have been trying since April. When I had my annual visit with my OB in June he told me if I didn't get pregnant in the next few months to call him for some tests. I decided to bypass that and go straight to an RE when my 6 months were up and had my first appointment a month ago. I have read that a lot of REs will re-run any tests your OB did, so I didn't see the point of having him do the tests. BUT, I have infertility insurance coverage that pays for it. If you don't have coverage you might want to start with your OB.

I will say that some of the tests they do are not fun, but I feel better knowing that everything is coming back okay.

I really appreicate everyone's comments. I've been kind of poopy this afternoon and I think I'm taking it out on my hubby.

I am not charting. I am using OPT. I have ovulated both months, I think. My test went from one line to two. We had sex every other day during my ovulation time. I'm using an app on my phone to keep up with my cycle.

I too, thought this was going to be a pretty easy ride. I'm not complaining yet. I'm only in my 2nd month. I think of all you ladies all the time and pray for healthy baby dust to be spread to all of us as soon as possible. I'm sure in a scared scared moment. Maybe I should have a beer.

I've only lurked here the past few months, but I'm 38 and we are TTC #2 (now on cycle 4). I did find this interesting odds calculator that was sort of cool the other week....thought I would post the link. It's based upon the results of a large study following couples until they conceived.

It told me I have a 43% chance after 6 months which at least is better sounding than less than 20% each month.

Well first I'd call your insurance to see what they cover. Mine covers diagnostic testing but nothing infertility related. So I needed to have all my hormone tests, HSG, vag u/s, etc. done by my OB to have it covered. My OB will now transfer my results to my RE (now that we've decided I need to go that route based on the results of all my fertility workup.

A lot of ladies here prefer to go to their RE. The general consensus is why bother any time with an OB when and RE can get to the punchline that much quicker? And at our ages each few months, years, etc. do make a difference.

My RE gave us a 5% chance of getting pg on our own at the age of 38, before I did any testing! So, yes those stats are true. The rule of thumb for women over 35 is 6 months trying, most insurance companies with IF coverage will stipulate that. Some women do have theor OB's do testing so that insurance can cover it, but I would stick with a RE when it somes to any procedures. They just have more specific training and education and they also will monitor you more than an OB will.
