Parenting after a Loss

BFing and sleep

Brendan slept from 10:30-7:30 this morning!  This is his longest stretch ever and super exciting!  The only problem is that my breasts are so uncomfortably engorged in the morning and I even pumped at about 12:30 last night.  Will this always be the case or does it get better?  He's been sleeping longer for the last couple weeks and it still is bad in the morning. It's almost like I'm punished for finally getting some sleep!

I'd rather have to deal with engorgement than no sleep, so I don't want to sound like I'm complaining, but if anybody has any suggestions or experiences I'm all ears!

Re: BFing and sleep

  • My body eventually regulated itself. I haven't noticed a decrease in my supply either. But it took about a week of waking up engorged for things to even out. My suggestion is to not pump late, ie. around midnight or so. Try not doing anything the entire time he sleeps. But if you are too worried you might damage your supply do what you have to! GL!

  • No, it will regulate. Yay for the awesome STTNing, but it does kind of suck that engorgement is the side effect in the beginning.  Moms never get a break!

  • I think it only took a few days for me to not feel engorged. I didn't pump in the evenings either. If you want to pump, but get sleep, I recommend pumping one hour after the first morning feeding. Yay for sleep!

  • I noticed my girls got used to it after a week or so and it didn't get quite as engorged, painful or leaked as much.  So far, no drop in supply (morning session made up for not pumping during the night) but I admit, it has not been long so only time will tell if my supply decreases or not at this point.
  • When that happened for me, I started to get up at 4 and pump... I usually got 4-5 ounces and built up a huge freezer stash until about 4 months when I gave it up. It took about a week to adjust and I did try to "restart it" to help my supply, but I never got that much again. GL!

  • I think there is something wrong with me b/c of this...LO has been STTN for a while- and every morning I am enormous, hard and lumps- and in pain.  The only thing that did stop was leaking- thank goodness!! I don't pump until after she eats- to make sure I get all the lumps out- I don't want to get a clogged duct.

So your body is supposed to regulate...I am sure yours will!

  • My body did get used to STTN. I used heat to relieve the pain. Try using handwarmers...they fit in the bra & last a long time. A hot shower then pump session in the morning always helped too.

    Hope you feel better soon!
