NTR: what could be causing our h/w floors to get SO slippery?!

Our hardwood floors have been getting more and more slippery. We had them refinished before moving in 1.5 yrs ago. Now it's gotten to the point where I have both my girls wear slippers around the house to avoid accidents. Even friends have been commenting about how slippery the floors have gotten...

I vacuum the floors and steam vac (just with water) every other week.

Thoughts on what could be causing this? Or solutions to make them less slippery?? We don't use furniture polish, so it's not residue from that.. I'm at a total loss!

  • I was just going to ask if you've used furniture polish because my ILs maids used it on their stairs last week! It was crazy slippery! ha!

We have hardwood floors but they are not slipper at all.  Sorry I am no help.

  • I think I remember you saying you had a cleaning lady.  If so, do you think she is using something new?  I remember when I was little our cleaning lady changed things up and the floor was really slippery.

ya, we do.. but they use all our stuff. I haven't been home lately when they're here though so maybe they switched things up, which would be really odd because I haven't bought anything new as far as cleaning supplies. I just told DH I really hope they aren't putting the Lysol floor cleaner (for the tiled bathrooms) in the steam cleaner...they wouldn't be doing that, right?! I mean, who would do that??!  Ugh, I guess I'll have to remember to ask them next time..

  • The only time our hardwood floors were dangerously slippery was when the cleaning lady (when I was growing up at my parents house) accidentally used too much Murphy's Oil Soap. ?They were like skating rinks!! ?I think my mom just went over the floors again with plain water to try and get some of the extra Murphy's up. ?I'm not sure about your floors since you just use steam though... I wouldn't think that just steam would make your floors slick.
  • Thanks guys! I'm starting to wonder if maybe they did use something on it. Maybe I should just steam mop again and see if it makes a difference. That would be a start at least, right.. :)
