crib + pack n play + bassinett? (dog owners come in!)

I am just trying to figure all of this out.  We are planning on having LO sleep in our room for a while before we move him to his crib in his room.

I was originally thinking of just getting a pack n play for the bedroom and having him sleep there.  The problem is that our bedrooms are on the second floor and I feel like we need something for downstairs for him to nap in. We also have a dog so I feel like he will need to be in something the dog can't get to.  My dog is sweet as can be but I still feel like we'll need that security, especially in the beginning.

So my new plan is to use the pack n play in the living room downstairs and maybe get a bassinet for our bedroom?  How does this sound?  Any other ideas? Any other dog owners with this situation, too?

  • I think that sounds like a good plan. We have dogs too. We still are unsure about which house we will be living in when our little girl gets here, but if it's a two story house- we're definitely doing what  you described!

  • We're not setting up the crib until we move, but the plan is to have a bassinet in the bedroom upstairs and probably a pack n play in the family room downstairs. I have 3 dogs and they've been good when other people have brought their babies, but I still want to keep an eye on both the baby and dogs during nap time. So, it sounds like I'm on the same plan as you.

  • We might not get a PNP right away.  I want to get the Fisher Price Rock & Play sleeper because it's so portable (our house is 2-story too).  My dogs are pretty small so I don't think they'd be able to get to the baby (plus they freak out easily, I imagine they'll stay away) but it might not be tall enough for Biscuit.

  • i think i am also getting the FP rock and play sleeper for my bedroom.  we have 2 dogs and 2 cats, and i think we will definitely want to the PnP downstairs.

  • We had two Pack N' Plays, one for upstairs in our room and one downstairs.  Our dog is great with DS now and never had a problem with other babies, but when DS first came home our dog didn't like his newborn cries.  She would scratch at the netting on the Pack N' Play when he'd cry, but luckily never ripped it.  So I agree that getting something that is higher up and can't be tipped over is best for the first couple of weeks at least.  Btw, our dog is only 9 pounds and usually very gentle.  Then we just sent the basic PNP to my mom and dad's house.

  • We have three small dogs and are going with the pack and play at first.  Our house is one story so it should not be too hard to move around for awhile.

Sounds like you have a good plan to me.

  • Or, if you have the room in your bedroom, you could just assemble the crib in there in the beginning.  Then, when you later move baby into his/her own room, just dis- and re-assemble it in there.
  • Thanks for the input, everyone! Artsy, that sleeper looks neat- that's always a possibility for the bedroom.  I think you're right about being a little too low for Biscuit in the lr.

  • Sounds good. Right now, we're in an apartment and the twins have PNPs in the living room and cribs in their nursery. We'll do the same when we move into our new house. We have a small dog but she knows that she isn't allowed in bedrooms.

  • We did the exact thing you're thinking about. Bassinet in our bedroom (until our son moved to his room at five months) and a pack n play in the downstairs where he took his naps. Worked perfectly!

  • We are going to put Landon in his crib right away... at least that's the plan. But we'll have a PNP for downstairs.
  • We were in the same situation when DD was born.  Two huge nose-butting dogs.  We had a P-N-P with bassinet for sleeping, but also a Bright Starts By Your Side chair for napping and sitting, It reclined and was high off the ground. The dogs would get close enough to sniff, but that's it.  It worked great and DD still wants to sit in it when she's sick, but I don't think they make it anymore. I just bought the Fisher Price Rock-n-Play Sleeper.  It's also set pretty high off the ground, but I like that it is easier to move around.

  • My "plan" is to register for a more expensive packnplay that has the infant sleeper/changing station to put in our bedroom until we decide to move baby to the crib/nursery.   The other part to the "plan" is to register or buy a cheaper packnplay at like target that just has the bassinet feature to keep downstairs and/or take to grandmas b/c it has less features and is a little more portable.  Then by the time my maternity leave is over, I will probably have moved baby to crib, and then will send the cheaper packnplay to our daycare providers and move the one in our room downstairs...complicated?
  • We were given a basinett from a friend and I'm planning to get a pack n play for the first floor if it doesn't get gotten for my baby shower.  My dogs can be a little curious and sometimes energetic so I think the packnplay is safer for the downstairs.  I also have a front room that I had DH put a 1/2 door on because thats where my bunnies live, so I'll probably put the packnplay in there so the dogs can't get to it while they're in the house and wake the baby up.
