3rd Trimester

What's the latest you'd wait to buy a car seat?

I'm 29 wks now, and I'd really like to get our car seat bought. With all the early deliveries on here, you just have to realize that even if you had 2 prior full term births, it could very much happen at any time. DH would like to wait until the beginning of Jan, when I'll be 36wks.

Really, what do you think it the absolute latest we should wait to buy a car seat? My prior deliveries were at 38/almost 39wks, and 37wks.

Re: What's the latest you'd wait to buy a car seat?

  • I pressured DH into getting ours just a few weeks ago. He wanted to wait, too, until December. I gave him a Hellz No and told him if he didn't get it with me, I'd go get it myself- and after he saw how big the box was (and knowing I would make good on a threat like that) he obliged me. :D I'm soon going to use this tactic on getting a new vehicle.

Are you ordering it online or buying in-store? Maybe you could go down the Black Friday road and see if you can find a deal on it...

  • I think anytime is a good time, I would rather have it now and not worry about it.  My DH wanted ours purchased and out of the way early in case anything happened, so we have had our carseat since I was about 23 weeks.

  • Holly, I wanted to go instore to get it. We're going to go to Babies R Us and test drive out the snurgride 35 to make sure it fits in our stroller, and then we'll buy the one I emailed to you. :D But, he wants to wait as long as possible to do it. I can understand why, with Christmas coming on and all, but really- I do not want to wait as long as he wants to wait!

  • we went ahead and got ours when i was 29 weeks just to be on the safe side, we got the chicco travel system. Haven't got to use it yet seems like were going to love it. :)
  • We have been watching the flyers and we have our two infant car seats (one is new as part of a travel system, and one is used that I got from my sister), and our two convertible car seats - we got all of them on sale.  We are just storing the convertibles until we need them (both of them we got from midnight madness sales for an exceptional deal, or else we probably wouldn't have them yet).  I say get them now and then you don't have to worry about it.  Are there any good black Friday deals you could take advantage of?

ETA: No, I'm not having twins, but we don't want to have to hassle with moving car seats in both vehicles all the time...and the one infant car seat was free from my sister.

  • Just tell him it makes sense to get it now...does he really want to go get a car seat while you're at the hospital and install the base when it's cold and he could be with you and your newborn? Silly men....
  • We bought ours at 35 weeks. If LO would have come early, we could of had a family member or DH go by BRU. I wouldn't worry about it before 34 weeks. If you deliver early, you most likely will NOT bring home a 29-33 weeker immediately after delivery.

This exactly.  But I understand the desire to have it ready (we got ours around 30w) and hope your husband comes around.  I don't think they really get the urge some of us have to have everything READY.

  • Get it now! Especially since your other babies were early. What is he thinking?

  • I bought my infant car seat some time in my 5th month.  I waited for a sale at Target & utilized a coupon and a gift card.

I bought another base a little while later. Babies R Us will give you 20% off coupons if you join their rewards program.  I got the 2nd base at BRU.

We had one base installed in hubby's SUV about 5 weeks before due date.  I'm a worrier by nature, and the last thing I wanted is hubby running around getting the car seat installed while I'm in the middle of labor.

We have one convertible seat that I snatched up on clearance.

*We're trading in my car soon... so I haven't installed the base in my car, yet.

  • I don't have one yet. Well probably buy it next week but if worse came to worst I would send my mom to baby's r us to pick one up when we were in the hospital if LO showed up early.

This would be fine... if I HAD any family nearby.

  • My sister adopted my nephew in August.  They literally flew out and arrived at the hospital less than an hour before their son was born.  They had nothing at all and my BIL was able to step out of the hospital for an hour or so to go to Target and get a car seat and some other things like bottles, formula, and clothes.  I'm trying to keep this in mind when planning.  You don't really have to have anything beforehand.  Since they were out of state with him for the first 6 weeks of his life, my nephew is very portable.  They didn't have the luxury of keeping him at home away from other people either; they were in a hotel for the first week and a half.  So they took him with them to Babies R Us to get everything else.

  • Friggitall, I'm not trying to get stuff last minute, people!! I don't care what SIL you have who did it and it worked for them, I'm trying to ask people who actually LIKE to plan ahead and be ready for things when they got one/when they think I should get one. For real, getting one while I'm at the hospital is NOT what I have in mind. I prefer my DH to be in the hospital WITH ME and the new baby instead of running to some store and picking out the cheapest POS he can find. Sorry, but you girls who are giving me this 'he can go get it while you're in the hospital' crap SOUND LIKE you're insinuating or suggesting that I just wait. Even if that's not what you're saying, that's how I hear it. For real, that's unreasonable.

I do think about 32 wks is the absolute latest we should wait. I had my other babies a smidge early, so it wouldn't hurt to get it early. With both of our last kids we had our car seat by 26wks!

  • I don't see why he doesn't want to get it now? Either you spend the money and get it now or you spend the money and get it later. Either way you'll need it for sure. I just don't get what could be a possible con to getting right away, you know? Someone said something about it being the holidays so you might want to wait - but like I said, buy it now or buy it later - still got to get it done right?
