Medical bills are more when you have insurance?

I find this rather disturbing. I originally got a bill for my NT scan and they for some reason didn't have my insurance info even though I gave it to them at the time of the appointment.  The bill I received was for self pay with no insurance and was around $200 even though the actual total was over 2k.  I thought maybe they just didnt update their system with my info yet, so I waited for the next bill which still said I didn't have insurance.  So I called them and gave them my insurance info.  The insurance I had at the time was from DH's work before I switched to mine because his deductible was too high.  So now I get a bill after it being submitted to insurance and its over 800$.  Id be so much better off not having insurance.  I think I might just pay the first bill I have and see what happens

Re: Medical bills are more when you have insurance?

  • Insurance companies have contracted amounts that they pay for services. All doctors offices insurance rates are significantly higher than self pay rates. They bill the insurance and the insurance only pays a certain amount. They then have to write off what they insurance doesnt pay. But doctors usually have set prices for self pay patients. Depending on your insurance and your deductible/coinsurance sometime it is beneficial to you to self pay. Most doctors prefer self pay as well if you can pay the whole amount. They do not want a payment plan when they can bill the insurance company and get payment in full. Am I making sense? lol it seems like I am rambling. Its kind of hard to explain.

  • It is probably so high because you haven't met your deductible yet. Once you do, your medical bills will be minimal compared to what you would pay out of pocket with no insurance.
