2nd Trimester

Heart Fluttering

I have sometimes had what I call "heart hiccups" in the past.  In the last couple days my heartbeat has been very noticable (my whole chest moves) and seems to be irregular and forced.  I did google it and found that it is more common during pregnancy due to hormones and increased blood flow.  I will be calling my OBs today anyway just to see what they say.

Has anyone else had the heart flutters?  I was just wondering if it is really common.

Re: Heart Fluttering

  • Yup!  They are probably palpitations. I have had them since before my pregnancy, but found that they intensified when I got pregnant.  They are usually benign, but I have seen a cardiologist to make sure they weren't a symptom of something else (because they really freaked me out when they started).   I have a few friends who also got them during pregnancy so I don't think it is that unusal.

Also, I also had a hard time with them right after I delivered my first child (the first three days) when all of blood is being redirected and your whole body is a little out of wack.

  • I have had them too and my Dr said that it's normal and not to worry about it.

  • yes- and early on i kept mistaking it for the baby moving!

i would feel it and try to sit very still and put my hand on my belly to see if thats what i was feeling. but my own heartbeat would be so strong and pound so hard that there was no way i was going to feel anything else.

its uncomfortable and a little nerve racking. mine went away and seemed to even out a few weeks ago.

feel better! try not to worry, im sure that makes it worse.

  • I've been experiencing this too. they last for like an hour. How long does it last for everyone else?

i notice my pulse will go up 20bpm at most when this happens. I had my heart checked out last yr due to similar symptoms and was told everything is normal.

  • I've had them since about 6w. They are annoying but my OB says they are completely normal. They come and go for me, I usually get them a couple times per week.

  • I had them before I was pregnant, but it happened A LOT in the first tri. When I asked my doctor they said it was completely normal with the increased blood flow but they told me that because of that I needed to completely cut caffeine out of my diet (I was doing the 200mg a day thing before that). After cutting out caffeine it went away.

  • Update: I called my doctor and he said that it is pretty normal and I shouldn't worry.  But, he also said not to ignore it and recomended an internalist and told me to see what she thinks just to be sure.

  • I have them because my BP has been raised. I am working hard to get it down because I really hate the feeling of these hard heartbeats.
