The whole TMBG discussion got me reminicing tonight...
What is your coolest concert experiences? Doesn't have to be your first show, since often that is pretty embarassing and cheesy. (REO Speedwagon!!)
But I have a couple of cool ones...
Seeing the Replacements opening for REM. My two favorites in one show!
Chatting with Kim from Sonic Youth in the bathroom at this tiny concert hall in podunk Iowa. She didn't have a dressing room and had to change in a stall. She had on a tee-shirt that said "Bacon" on it.
Having beers with some of the members of Great Big Sea after a show just a few years ago. LOVE them!
Re: NBR-Best concert experiences?
Definitely when I went to see Radiohead with a good friend a several years back at the Hollywood Bowl. It was before I was married, probably a good 6 or 7 years back. She had bought the tickets from someone on the internet, at face value. We got there and went looking for our seats. We kept walking forward, and farther and farther forward. Then we realized we were in the front row! We couldn't believe it! It was amazing. And Ed, who I was in love with, stared at me for at least 30 seconds at some point during the show. When I realized it, I gave him the biggest grin. After he looked away, my friend and I looked at each other and said, simultaneously, "Did you see that??!!" Of course, he wouldn't even glance at me for the rest of the show. :-(
Second place is definitely seeing Depeche Mode at the Forum in high school. I went with my Girl Scout besties, who are still my besties today. Fantastic show -- it was the Songs of Faith and Devotion Tour, and I still wear my tee-shirt. (My Radiohead tees are all the modern, girly fitted tees, and they sadly do not fit at the moment.)
Ha! My 1st show was Wham and it was awesome! I also got to see U2 (Joshua Tree tour) when I was young.
My all time fav shows are DMB. The owner of my company has season tix for the 10th row along with vip parking/tent access. He hates DMB and gives the tix to me for FREE. It is one night of feeling like the coolest person on earth! Too bad I am a sahm now. I guess it's bye bye on those tix. Oh well!
Duran Duran reunion tour 99/2000. The first time I ever got to see them, and I was a fan since I was 10....so that was a great experience. A co-worker hooked me up with fourth row tickets. Great concert. Roger Taylor, who was my #1 guy when I was little, was still looking good.
I attended so many concerts in college: Blur, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Jesus and Mary Chain, Depeche Mode...it's hard to really narrow it down.
Erasure put on a great show about 3 years ago. Another band I've been a fan of since high school, but never got to see in concert until then.
And, Morrissey is always good. I won't miss his shows when he's in town. I'm still holding out hope for a Smiths reunion one day.
^ Oh my god, so was mine! I am usually mortified to tell people that. At the Vet in Philadelphia ('84 I think). I was in seventh grade.
My favorite shows were The Cure in Philly (twice) and The Hoodogurus at City Gardens in Trenton. Smallest venue I ever saw a show and by far the coolest. Although, Trenton scared the crap out of me.
I am so jealous. I never got to see The Replacements play live. They are probably my favorite all time band. I did see REM once or twice, but man.... totally jealous.
Oh boy. I've been to hundreds of concerts back in the day. The $$ I spent... wow. Performance wise, Alanis Morisette, Melissa Etheridge, Elton John, and Live (all seperate of course- ha!) have been some of my favorite shows, but I've found the best EXPERIENCES have been shows at smaller venues- seeing Gavin Rossdale up close during a Bush show before they became big... being in a mosh pit while drooling over the lead singer of Candlebox... seeing my alltime favorite, Bryan Adams, put on a completely acoustic show (May 2009) at a small theatre.

I saw Tori Amos during the Under the Pink tour in college and it was amazing. She played in our fine arts auditorium and it was small and intimate.
I have seen the Indigo Girls so many times I can't count. Always a great show.
The strangest show I have seen but enjoyed would be Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, and the Jim Rose freak show.
The best musically was *** Dale, The King of Surf Guitar, at a very small venue. He is old but can still rock. (If you don't know who he is but know the Pulp Fiction soundtrack he is on it) We met him after and he signed my husbands tee. He played a song on the guitar using drum sticks.
Sorry, I am all over the post. LOL. I just remembered another amazing show. Joe Jackson. It was at the Spectrum, but it ended up not selling any tickets, so they closed it off so that it was only about an 1/8 th of the place. He was incredible.
The bump censored DickDale. LOL! I know exactly who he is. I met him too, at one of our surf expos. I am getting ready to dig out his Chrsitmas CD to play in the shop
Oh.. I remember another good one!
Very small venue in Denver (the Bluebird, for you locals) to see Bob Mould. Went by myself because no one else wanted to go. So I'm standing there enduring the opening act and I realize Bob himself is standing right next to me, watching as well. I was so flustered, all I could say was, "Hey, have a great show!" And he smiled and said "Sure thing!!"
Bob Mould. Man, that's another one that reminds me of my HS boyfriend.
That story is similar to me seeing G-Love at the TLA. It was when his demo tape was floating around and he had *just* been signed to a label. We went to "That Little Bar" inside the TLA for a drink before the show started and and saw this crazy looking dude in a 70's peach colored suit. Yeah, it was G-Love. No one had a clue. As soon as I saw him on stage I was like, "Damn."
My first concert was the White Tour - White Snake and White Lion, all the hair band you can stand.
In the past 10 years we have been going to all the old rockers.. The Who, Neil Young, KISS.
Love this question!! Going to shows is my all time favorite activity. I go whenever I get a chance. Most recent shows were Robert Randolph and the Family Band (at WXPN in Philly), The Hold Steady (at The Troc in Philly), and Richard Thompson (at the Scottish Rite Auditorium in Collingswood, NJ).
But my best concert experience would have to be what has come to be known as "The Best Day Ever"...... it was in the summer of 2006. The Derek Trucks Band was playing a free concert at noon on a Friday at WXPN in Philly. I had never heard of them, and asked my then boyfriend (later to become my DH) if he ever heard of them. He said oh yeah, you should defintely go. (I was teaching at the time, so I was off for the summer). My best friend also is a teacher so we both decided to go to the show. Well, after the show is over (about 1:15pm in the afternoon) we are having a drink at the bar in the venue and one of the band members is also having a cocktail. We start talking with him and telling him what a great show, blah, blah, blah. He is so nice and very kind. He tells us that they are playing that night at the Tweeter Center in Camden and we should come to the show. We tell him it is sold out and we do not have tix. (let me tell you the show was Derek Trucks Band who was opening for The Allman Brothers Band who was opening for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!!) He says no problem, I will put you on the list, and has us write our names on bar napkins. He says our tix will be at will call and he hopes to see us there. We are like thanks!! (but really don't think that this will actually happen).
So my friend and I go to a bar in Philly for some lunch, I end up winning a dart tournament against some businessmen, and we take the train to Camden to see what the story is. Well, sure enough, there are tix with our names on them at will call. We couldn't believe it. We go to our seats in the 17th row and are psyched. The band comes on and the keyboard player (Kofi) who gave us the tix sees us and waves to us from stage. After their set, he came down and sat with us and bought us drinks for the entire night. The Allman Bros were amazing and Tom Petty always puts on a good show. We exchanged numbers and took the train home. The few pics we have from that day are hysterical..... but what an amazing memory!
...and FYI~ Kofi called me a few times, but with his tour schedule, it got hard to keep up. Saw him the summer of 2009 again at a show and he totally remembered us (I was with the same friend)! We talked about what a great time we had that day and he was so friendly....
ahhhh..... goood times
So many - really soooo many!! My favorite was Duran Duran a couple years ago. Seriously, I count it as one of my 5 top happy times. Tim has a picture of me with this completely insane grin on my face - I get this look when I'm truly, deeply, crazy happy.
Maybe after that was Wilco - sooooo freaking awesome. Jeff Tweedy. Dammm.
There is a great music venue in Gainesville, FL - it used to be called the Covered Dish. I saw lots and lots of bands there - one of my favorites was an intimate show with Mark Kozelek. Then we saw him with Sun Kil Moon at an AMAZING venue here called the Great American Music Hall. I was about 8 months pregnant and looking glorious with that globoid belly! The music was rich and thick and filled every single little nook and cranny of that music hall. The bass was as inescapable as cigar smoke. Every sensory system was in total overload with that one. Loved it. Such an amazing memory....
dude. I can't even tell you the money I would pay to see that. Oh freak. I would do whatever it took to make it to that. Can you even imagine Sweet and Tender Hooligan in person? Dang.
Great question!
I guess it was a requirement to see the Joshua Tree tour. I saw U2 a bunch of times - I loved the feeling I got from their songs.
Nine Inch Nails - saw them a couple of times as well. They are great in concert.
Henry Rollins at Woodstock 1994
Indigo Girls - I somehow end up seeing them for free about once a year.
But my absolute best concert was the B52s at a practice gym at the University of RI. We were so close to the band.
