Good Samaritan or Stony Brook ??

I am trying to do some research on both hospitals.....but would love ANY input from you girls.  I am debating where to give birth. My OBGYN goes to Good Sam, but I live closer to Stony Brook. (I'd be willing to change doctors.)

Any thoughts or recommendation you can share?  Please?  Thanks so much!!

Re: Good Samaritan or Stony Brook ??

  • I would highly reccomend Good Samaritan Hospital.  I have had bad experiences at Stony Brook and I have heard many other people have too, it is a teaching hospital so you get alot of medical students in the room with you no matter what the case, not a very good experience if they don't entirely know what they are doing.

  • Good Samaritan is also a teaching hospital and you will have medical students, interns and residents in your room and assisting your doctor if you happen to have a c-section.  Stony Brook has a brand new L&D ward and large private rooms.  My cousin delivered at Good Sam and she was not happy with the facilities - old and small, but had no complaints when it came to the staff.  I've known a bunch of people that have delivered at Stony Brook and they didn't have any complaints.  I switched doctors from St. Catherine's because I wanted to deliver at Stony.  If anything were to happen to me or my baby, I know that they are fully equipped and have top notch staff to deal with any problems that my arise.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • I do not know much personally about Good Sam I have heard great things about the quality of their care, nurses, etc.  but I am without a doubt going to deliver at Stony Brook.  I was present in the delivery room for my sister-in-law's birth.  She had a large room and was continually monitored they were very attentive to her, encouraging, and very professional.  My SIL doesn't speak English very well so my husband and I were there to translate and to offer support.  Sometimes when there is a language barrier some hospitals tend to cut corners or do what is most convenient for them.  If they did this I didn't seem to notice.  There was 1 medical student that stopped in for about 5 minutes but he too was also very professional.  I spoke with my OB and specifically recommended to not have any medical students during my labor/delivery.  After she delivered my SIL had a large, private room to recover and nurse.  Several years ago my newborn sister was air lifted to Stony Brook, she was born with spinal meningitis.  About 45 minutes after my mother delivered by C-section the doctor at St. Charles told my mother, "Don't expect her to live." Such tact.  Well 16 years later my sister is healthy as can be and I credit the incredible NICU at Stony Brook.  I wouldn't have my baby anywhere else.
  • A co-worker of mine just delivered in Stony Brook and had nothing but good things to say about her experience.  And, like many have mentioned, you get a private room! :)  And she said the food was good, too!  I will be delivering at Stony, so I hope I have just as good an experience as other mommies!  Good luck!
