Dana's post reminded me of one of my very favorite TMBG memories...
Something like a million years ago, or 17 - it was 1993, I was in Budapest for a few weeks. I stayed at an awesome hostel that was big on fun and not so big on cleanliness, but I was 19 so I didn't mind the dirt.
Anyhoo, this hostel had a fun bar in the basement with a pool table and a super hot bar maid who didn't speak a lick of English. All the male backpackers hit on her despite the fact that all she would play over the stereo was Ace of Base. All. The. Time.
So, one night I gave her a TMBG tape and mimed asking her to play it instead. She obliged, but we only got halfway through "Birdhouse in Your Soul" before she took it out, gave it back to me and played "All That She Wants" for the 5 billionth time.
Good times.
What do YOU think about when you hear TMBG... or even Ace of Base?
Re: Let's take a stroll down AMA Lane
The first TMBG song I liked - and really the only one I liked - was Ana Ng after I saw the video on 120 minutes, which I would watch religiously every Sunday night because it was the only place I could see Nitzer Ebb, Depeche Mode, Echo and The Bunnymen and Smiths videos...and many more bands that just weren't going to be played in regular MTV rotation.
Ace of Base - Summer in England 1993. I was 21 and visiting the grandparents for their 50th anniversary party... and going to the clubs. All That She Wants was played a lot in the bars that summer.
I hear this.
TMBG played at Harvest Fest in Gainesville in 1998. Good times.
As I posted in the other thread, "Build a little birdhouse in your soul, my friends".
I've seen them a couple of times over the years and it's always been fun.
A few years ago, they played a free concert in downtown Denver and I remember thinking how sad it was that they've resorted to free shows. And I was annoyed at how loud it was, even for being outside. Then I was annoyed at realizing that I sounded like an old person.
Heather - love that story.
When I hear TMBG I think of my HS boyfriend. As I do when I hear any of the following: The Replacements, Modern English, The Hoodogurus, Graham Parker, The Descendants, The Psychedelic Furs... oh my gosh, I could go on and on.
Ace of Base, I can't remember right now. I'm sure it is a song, that if I could remember it, I would instantly remember my hate.
Oh my gosh, just thought of The Outfield. We spent a whole lot of time under the covers with their debut album playing
Hungary would have been an interesting country to visit! Closest I made it was Yugoslavia and Greece...and Ace of Base reminds me that all that I wanted back then was never a baby, never in a million years thought I'd ever have one but now I'm so glad I finally did!
I only knew Anna Ng. Was not a fan of the band.
My music tastes in college were quite the Brit Pop/Alternative/New Wave deal leftover 80s stuff (I was in college 88-92).

Me too! (Except it was Canada so College was only 3 years because we had an extra year of high school)
In 1993 I already had a 3 y.o. and was still married to her dad (divorced him in 2003). I am from Russia though - they did marriage + kids early back then regardless of the education level.
I saw No Doubt open for the Violent Femmes in Irvine in '93.
Man, we're old!
