Babies: 9 - 12 Months

She will only play with sippy cup!

DD knows exactly what to do with a bottle and drinks from it no problem or we nurse.

I want to transition her to a sippy cup.  Every time I give her one, she will take a sip or two and then plays with it!! I can't get her to drink from it.  I took the handles off to make it shaped more like a bottle since she really liked to play with the handles.  But it didn't help.

I've tried putting water in there and she really hates water.  Even from a bottle.  I've also tried both BM and formula.  Doesn't make any difference and doesn't entice her to drink.

Anyone else? Any suggestions?

  • Have you considered giving her some watered-down juice?  I haven't even tried that myself.  My DD is 9 months old, and she doesn't care much for a sippy cup either yet. I'm curious to see what others suggest.

  • We tried several kinds and he wouldn't drink out of any of them until I bought these.  He also just played with the handle or chewed on the spout, but never would suck anything out of the cup.  I bought those cups and sent them to school one day - that afternoon they told me no more bottles because he had taken all of his formula from the sippy cup!

Sounds like you might need to try a different cup...or just wait it out.  Our pedi said he'll drink from a sippy when he's ready.

  • Aiden did the same thing for the first couple days, so i finally i just took away the bottles all together.  Every ounce of fluid went into the sippy and soon he realized if he was going to drink he better not just play with the cup!  I kept it out and offered him sips as he was playing and throughout the day.  Now about after a week since we started introducing the idea he'll sit and guzzle the whole sippy down!  I hope this helps somewhat!
  • We've been giving DS water in his sippy at dinner for two months now and last night was the first time he actually drank out of it. He usually throws it at the dog and laughs. Last night he cried when DH took it from him to take him out of the high chair. I agree with the comment that they'll drink from it when ready.
  • I had the same problem. A co-worker suggested taking the valve out of the cup for a few sips so that they can really taste whats in there then put it back in place. I think most babies dont like to suck so hard. But if they know what they are getting they may work a little harder at it.
