TTC After a Loss

::Butting in with a question::

Hey ladies!  I normally hang on the 3TC board, but I'm popping over here to get some advice for a friend who isn't on TB.  I hope you don't mind...

A good friend of mine found out at her 12 week appointment yesterday that the baby had stopped growing at 8 weeks.  This is her 2nd loss - the first was at 8 weeks.  Her OB said that if she has a 3rd loss they'll do some testing.  She obviously doesn't want to wait until that point.  She is having a D&C tomorrow.  I am absolutely heartbroken for her.

Here are my questions for you:

1. Did you push for genetic testing on the tissue, or was it offered to you?

2. Is it maybe too early in the pregnancy to gather much from the testing, and not worth pushing the issue with her doctor?

TIA for your advice.  I really appreciate it!

  • I am sorry for your friends loss....I passed all my tissue at home but if I would have had a D&C I would have absolutely asked for testing....As far as repeat pregnancy loss I asked for testing on me after my second loss as I was 38 at the time HTH

to answer your questions I was offered genetic testing on the tissue (I m/c at 7wks4days).  If your friend wants testing done on the fetus to determine the cause of death than by all means she needs to push the issue.  Also, it's her body, if she wants testing done on her as well than I say she pushes that issue too.  If her OB refuses (which I doubt they will) than she needs a new dr!

  • I'm so sorry for your friends loss. I passed all the tissue a home also so that wasn't an option.

If your friend wants to try to get some answers, then I would encourage her to push the issue. However, if she found out at her 12 week appointment and the baby had passed at 8 weeks she may not be able to get much information because of the state of the tissue.

Good luck and thought and prayers to her.

  • I'm so sorry for your friend's loss. I would push for testing if I was her. I know their policy might be be to wait for three losses, but I think if she pushes for the testing she might be able to get some answers.

  • I'm sorry that your friend is going through this.  At my 8 week appointment, I found out that there was no HB and the baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks.  It was my second pregnancy and second loss in a row.  I had a D&C 2 days later and the doctor ordered genetic testing on the tissue.  (The testing was suggested to me;  I didn't have to push for it.)  It took a long time to get results - at least 4-5 weeks - but I did get an answer.

I'd recommend that your friend push for testing.  She should be aware that she might not get a definitive answer, but my doctor advised that most early losses are due to chromosomal defects and therefore this is the first thing that should be tested.

  • I echo the ladies here., and I am sorry for your friend's losses.

There are two types of testing following a m/c, not sure which one she is inquiring about.

I received an RPL (repeat pg. loss) panel after my first chemical. This tested me for clottting disorders etc.  this is the one dr's usually talk about "three losses" with.

You can also test the fetal tissue, but as someone mentioned, if she was 12w and the baby measured 8w, it may be too deteriorated to get an accurate result.

If there were chromosomal concerns she and her partner can also be tested to see if they are carriers/have any translocations or genetic concerns that could cause multiple losses.

This.  My OB thought it would be too late within a matter of days.

Thank you!  I love my Westie.  She is absolutely freaking hilarious.  I have never had a dog with such a big personality!

Thanks so much for this - I am not familiar with the types of testing available, so that was part of my fact-finding mission for her.  I think this will give her some great info to discuss with her OB tomorrow.

  • Ladies, thank you so much for all your input and well-wishes for my friend.  I sent her the link to our thread and I know she really appreciates the info.

I wish you all the best and hope that your TTC journeys have happy endings very soon!!

  • I lost my LO at 12weeks also. I requested the genetic screening at my d & e. I am So glad I did! We were able to find out our baby had triploidy. While there is nothing they can do for this, it was comforting to know the reason for our loss. Even if the drs tell her there is a chance she won't find out anything, in would push for the testing just in case! Ps-you are a very good friend to look out for her like this
