Irregular bleeding on the pill postpartum...

At my 6 week checkup, I started the mini pill because I was breastfeeding.  I was bleeding like a period every two weeks.  Right before I stopped it, I was spotting every few days.  Two weeks ago (I stopped breastfeeding three weeks ago), I switched to the regular birth control pill (Yasmin).  Since then, the bleeding has gotten less spotting and more flowing.  I can't even call it random spotting because I am wearing a tampon 80% of the time.  I emailed the doctor and she said that when starting a new pill, it is normal to have irregular bleeding for 1 to 2 cycles, and if it is still happening by the third, she would run some tests.  This seems worst than "irregular bleeding."  I was on Yasmin before I got pregnant, so I know it should work for me.  Did this happen to anybody else after having a baby?   I am sorry if this is TMI, but I am just curious, if anybody else had this problem and how long it lasted for them.

TIA!

  • Hi.  I am having this same problem.  I am on my 2nd pack of Loestrin BCP and in the middle of the pills, i get crampy...spot/bleed. It's weird.  It seems like they are not a strong enough dosage...???

I haven't called the doc... I thought maybe this month it may clear up....

  • This is a new BCP for me all together, and I am still not normal.  The last 2 AF's I get her 1 week before my sugar pills are to start, and continue bleeding through the 2nd week.  I am calling my OB next month if the same thing happens.  It is driving me crazy.

  • Yes, unfortunately I have been dealing with this for 7 months now :(  I bled from the time I gave birth to the time I had my pp appointment at 7 weeks.  So my doctor put me on the pill and said that should help.  I had been on Lo Ovral for years before getting pregnant and it really worked well for me.  I was on Lo Ovral for 4 cycles and the bleeding/cramping kept going.  It would switch between red and brown bleeding, so I was wearing tampons most of the month.  There was usually just a few days after my normal period where I wouldn't bleed... so I'd probably bleed at least 24 out of every 28 days.  My doctor told me to give it 3 cycles and then they'd switch my pill.

Now I'm on Loestrin 24 and still bleeding like crazy - it is my 2nd cycle.  Yesterday I had cramps and plenty of bleeding - it felt like a period but I'm only halfway through my pack.  I am cramping pretty bad almost every day.  I am going back to my doctor next week for an ultrasound to see if anything else is going on.  I do have endometriosis (actually diagnosed during my c-section), so I'm not sure if that is impacting anything.

I'm sorry I'm of no help, but just wanted to say I completely understand what you are going through.  I hope they are able to find something that works for you and it stops soon!

  • I had the exact same problem on loestrin 24 FE.  Mine made me very, very moody & bloated & my boobs got huge & I had mid-cycle spotting (sometimes heavy spotting) & then spotting when my AF was due.  I never really had a regular AF cycle w/i the 3 months.  Also (TMI) I had large clots every time I was spotting & it seemed like I was spotting more then half of my cycle.  After I used the samples he gave me I never went & filled my prescription & I've been meaning to call him & see if I can try something else.  Since I've been off my cycles are normal again & the bloating/moods have gone away.

  • I am having all the same issues with my BCP that you are postpartum.  I hope that someone replies with a solution to this issue because my OB seems stumped.  If nothing else, it is quite annoying.

  • I too had this problem. I bled for 7 weeks PP. I had the Depo-provera shot at my 6 week to prevent my endometriosis from getting really bad again. I got my first AF two weeks later (Jan 17)and it was horrible. Then I got a light AF in Feb. skipped March, had a light AF April and May skipped June and Mid July,  I began bleeding and kept bleeding for 3 weeks, stopped a week then bled again for 5 1/2. Finally I went to OB and I had a cyst on my right ovary and the lining of my uterus was super thin. I did 5 weeks of Loestrin 24 and got so icky I had to stop, but finally stopped bleeding.  I went back last monday and the cyst is gone, then got my first regular cycle this year this past wednesday. I think when we add hormones to our bodies post partum it just wrecks havoc with our cycle. Go back to your OB if you feel any bleeding is too much or for too long. My OB told me I could have miscarried had I gotten pregnant with a uterine lining thinned like that!!!!
