WWYD? Possible allergic reaction?

DD has her 3rd ear infection. :(  I took her to the pedi this morning and gave her a first dose of amoxicillin around 12:45. Now I've noticed that her left leg is really red and splotchy. I'm really paranoid of her having an allergic reaction b/c it runs in my family. Myself, my sister, my mom, and my MIL are all allergic to penicillin.

The nurse told me that it is unusual to see a reaction this early in the dosing. She said it usually doesn't show up until 7-8 days. She said I could give her Benadryl with her next dose tonight. But I don't want to give that to her just because. Would you go ahead and give her some before bed? Or would you wait it out?

  • I would give her some before bed just in case since the nurse rec'd it.

  • You know we just dealt with this and it happened just as your nurse said, after about 7 days of the meds. We first noticed a few red splotches on Sunday before bath and just chalked it up to heat rash or something else innocent since Lily has sensitive skin. When she woke up Monday mornng we noticed that it had spread all over. Her legs were the last to get it. She didn't seem bothered by it really so we didn't give her the benadryl unless she seemed extra fussy. The doctor told us it could take one to two weeks for it to go away completely and we are still seeing some dry, red skin because of it. We only gave her benadryl on the 2nd and 3rd day of the reaction because of extra fussiness. I really hope it is nothing and you don't have to deal with an allergy!

If it were me I would wait to give her the medicine to see if it causes her any discomfort, but I am extra cautious about taking meds and giving them to Lily if they aren't needed.

  • I would be calling my pediatrician back and asking to speak with the doctor.  My understanding of amoxicillin is there are two types of reactions.  A true allergic reaction has a sudden onset, shortly after taking the medication.  This reaction can include skin rash and breathing problems.  There is also something called an amoxicillin rash, which is a benign non-allergenic rash.  That is the rash that typically onsets after taking the medication for a week.  Given your family history, knowing allergies can be familial, and the sudden onset of the rash, I would be more concerned about an allergic reaction.  I would not redose my child with the amoxicillin until I had a physician assure me this was not an allergic reaction and they could explain to me why they were certain of that fact.  Oh, and I would give a dose of benadryl.   Smile
  • DS got a rash as a result of the amoxicillian, though it didn't seem to bother him. Dr. Google says that there can be such a thing as amoxicillian rash, which isn't really an allergy- more a side effect. I feel like, as long as it didn't bother DS, it was okay. However, I think I may request another antibiotic next time just to save his precious skin from looking splotchy.

ETA: I think some of it depends on how the rash presents. DS's for example was not raised. It did appear pretty soon after we started the meds, though.

Ditto this exactly. Hope it's not an allergy. Does your Pedi know of the family history?
  • I'm trying to remember the timeline...  Kate's hives appeared several days after she started the Amoxicillin, but she was miserable for 2 weeks while the medication left her system.  I would not give her another dose, I would ask for a different antibiotic tomorrow, and I would give her Benedryl tonight.  I don't like medicating Kate, but I also don't like to mess around with allergic reaction having had several myself.  It's easy enough for your dr to call in a different antibiotic.  Why chance it?

      Why chance it?

This has always been my POV regarding even a possible allergic reaction to a med. There are SO many different antibiotics (and pain meds for example), why mess with it? It's not like having a documented allergy to amoxicillian will keep her from becoming a Fighter Pilot or something!
