I had a student miss a big test a few weeks ago. She set up a time to come in the morning to make it up. Our school starts at 7:10 a.m (I try to be here at 6:45) and I have a 1/2 hour drive, so to be here early for me is really hard!
So, I got up extra early that day and she never showed. I scheduled another time with her and this time it was after school. I waited around and she never showed. (I then saw her watching the homecoming parade that afternoon!)
After two chances, I told her she could no longer make up the test. I wasn't going to waste any more of my free time! (I didn't say that part to her).
Well, after emailing her mom about the issue, her mom makes no apologies and simply asks me to let her take the test sometime so that she can be eligible for basketball.
WTF?! Seriously, dealing with parents is the worst part about being a teacher! I don't want to give her the test, so now I've had to contact an administrator. The thing is...he'll probably tell me to give it to her.
Re: School-related vent
Well tell admisn. to schedule a time HE can do it!!!!!!!!
My dh deals with these kids all the time and they are not self motivated and wait for everyone else to make their stuff happen while they enjoy the day texTin their friends!
?Ughhhhh I ?Soooo completely?frustrating?! ?One scho0L I mentored at was totaL suburbia and when teachers didnt do as asked by parents they would then send requests on their legal letterhead from their firm to be sure they got what ever they wanted it was soooo intimidating for teachers to not be in any kind of control...
get a pint of ben and jerrys and eat ?that while she takes the test...at least you wont be wasting/not enjoying ?your time!!!!!!!?

As of now, I'm thinking about giving her the test during class one day (and she will be responsible for any homework/class work she misses out on) AND only give her half credit since it is so late.
We are already almost done with this current unit that followed the short story unit, so I know she'll do awful.
It's not like I want her to have a bad grade...That reflects poorly upon me. I just want my students to learn to be responsible and to have some manners! I don't want to be bullied by parents.

I can sympathize - DH is a HS Special Ed - Behavior Disorders teacher and my mom is a 6th grade language arts teacher. Teachers work harder than anyone I know and rarely get thanks from parents, kids or administrators.
A few weeks ago DH had a parent (a mom) schedule a meeting with him and some other administrators to talk about her child after school. The mom never showed to the meeting she scheduled. It's so frustrating when they take time out of your schedule. Unfortunately, the kid learns this behavior from their parents...
