Success after IF

School-related vent

I had a student miss a big test a few weeks ago. She set up a time to come in the morning to make it up. Our school starts at 7:10 a.m (I try to be here at 6:45) and I have a 1/2 hour drive, so to be here early for me is really hard!

So, I got up extra early that day and she never showed. I scheduled another time with her and this time it was after school. I waited around and she never showed. (I then saw her watching the homecoming parade that afternoon!)

After two chances, I told her she could no longer make up the test. I wasn't going to waste any more of my free time! (I didn't say that part to her).

Well, after emailing her mom about the issue, her mom makes no apologies and simply asks me to let her take the test sometime so that she can be eligible for basketball.

WTF?! Seriously, dealing with parents is the worst part about being a teacher! I don't want to give her the test, so now I've had to contact an administrator. The thing is...he'll probably tell me to give it to her.

Re: School-related vent

  • That is RIDICULOUS. I wouldn't have even given her the SECOND chance. I'm interested in hearing what your principal says. Mine would totally support me. Parents today are SO rude. I don't care about the sports.....school is more important. I have parents e-mail me all the time to say things like, "you are the only teacher who gave my child a D and therefore they can't play basketball, etc......could you give them extra credit so they can get to a C." Its such B.S. I wish parents would hold their kids accountable and I wish they would start respecting us.....grrr....this is exactly why I hate my job....

  • Well tell admisn. to schedule a time HE can do it!!!!!!!!

My dh deals with these kids all the time and they are not self motivated and wait for everyone else to make their stuff happen while they enjoy the day texTin their friends!

?Ughhhhh I ?Soooo completely?frustrating?! ?One scho0L I mentored at was totaL suburbia and when teachers didnt do as asked by parents they would then send requests on their legal letterhead from their firm to be sure they got what ever they wanted it was soooo intimidating for teachers to not be in any kind of control...

get a pint of ben and jerrys and eat ?that while she takes the test...at least you wont be wasting/not enjoying ?your time!!!!!!!?

  • I'm a teacher as well and I can totally sympathize with this situation.  It sucks bc your admin is most likely going to tell you to let her make up the test.  Can she do it on a free period or hers so this way you aren't giving up any more of your free time?  If you really wanted to get back at her you could make the test really difficult... I know evil but it might make it worth your while :)

  • As of now, I'm thinking about giving her the test during class one day (and she will be responsible for any homework/class work she misses out on) AND only give her half credit since it is so late.

We are already almost done with this current unit that followed the short story unit, so I know she'll do awful.

It's not like I want her to have a bad grade...That reflects poorly upon me. I just want my students to learn to be responsible and to have some manners! I don't want to be bullied by parents.

  • Woah!  When I was in school we werent allowed to make up missed tests unless it was for a really good reason.  If we were given a second chance to come in before or after school that would have been it, if we missed that it would be a 0, no questions asked.  Give her a zero, if they want to fight it that is up to them, you gave her plenty of chances.

  • I can sympathize - DH is a HS Special Ed - Behavior Disorders teacher and my mom is a 6th grade language arts teacher.  Teachers work harder than anyone I know and rarely get thanks from parents, kids or administrators.

A few weeks ago DH had a parent (a mom) schedule a meeting with him and some other administrators to talk about her child after school.  The mom never showed to the meeting she scheduled.  It's so frustrating when they take time out of your schedule.  Unfortunately, the kid learns this behavior from their parents...

  • THat would frustrate me to no end. I would be so upset if the admin made me give it to her.
