Question about sex after delivery

The hospital class sparked a question and at the time I didn't want to ask because I didn't feel some of the men ::coughkingdouchecough:: could take it.

The teacher made it sound like you're not allowed to have sex for 6 weeks after delivery because you could ovulate as soon as 2-3 weeks after your baby is born and they don't want you KU that soon after you give birth.  Is that the reason they don't want you having sex?  I was under the impression you bleed heavily for up to 6 weeks after birth and you're far too sore to have sex.

Anyone know what the deal is?

  • Speaking of immaturity...did you see H and I start laughing when she kept saying Pooh Books. We laugh at anything with the word poo in it. So stupid.

  • I can imagine that birth is hard on your girly anatomy, and especially if you tear they want it all to heal before sex. ?That being said, I'm curious about this too. ?There must be many women who come out without tears or too much irritation.
  • I laughed at my husbands notes.  I'm not sure if he thought they were actually books about poo or was just using shorthand.  I'm going with the first.

    That reminds me of this:

  • I don't know about ovulation... but sex after delivery hurts like a motherfuccker.  And here's the kicker - I had a C-SECTION!!!

I thought my va-jay-jay would be fine as soon as I was feeling okay to go for it, but it hurt worse than the first time I ever had sex!  We tried lube, LOTS of lube, and it was still uncomfortable.  My OB said that it's your PP hormones that make you dry as a bone down there.  I was 4 or 5 months PP (after I stopped breastfeeding) before I enjoyed sex again.  I'm just preparing you!

  • My mom and I were actually talking about this last night (she's a midwife, as you know).  Her words were, "Yea, they say 6 weeks, but that's not set in stone.  You probably won't want to for a while, though!"  There are plenty of women who come out without tears, but I think Michelle Duggar is the only one who comes out of it with no irritation.

As far as the bleeding goes, she said it should be pretty heavy and maybe a little clotty for only a day or so, then slow down to period-like bleeding, then to brownish spotting.  If you don't overdo it, it should clear up in about 10 days, and if you go backwards at all (i.e., go from brownish spotting back to period-type bleeding), then that's your body telling you that you're overdoing things and you need to rest.

  • Most people bleed pretty heavily for several weeks and are sore for several weeks.  I think my soreness had ended by about 2 weeks PP, but I still bled until about 5 weeks PP.  I didn't have any tears or an episiotomy, but if you did, you'd need that to heal too.

I don't know about the ovulation thing.  If you're BFing, you probably won't ovulate for awhile.  I still started my period while BFing, but it took 3 months.  I think most people I've talked to who FF said that it took a couple of months for AF to return as well.

  • You can't have sex for 4 to 6 weeks post delivery b/c your uterus is still an open wound for that period of time.  As far as bleeding goes I only bled heavily for a few days and was done bleeding all together by 3 weeks, however I was still sore until about 4 weeks. This may be TMI but I tore had hemis and an episiotimy.
  • It's too early in the morning (and possibly my pregnancy) for me to be reading about this.  I can't handle this at the moment.  Sad

  • It's a combination of lots of things - infection risk is high among them, as another poster mentioned.  Allowing adequate time for tears to heal - a second degree tear (or worse) is already a tear into the muscle.  That needs time to heal.  Allowing the mother to recover.  The fact that ovulation could indeed occur again relatively quickly, even if you are breastfeeding (which is how women can be pregnant already at their 6 week check up).  Physiologically/biologically speaking, it is not ideal for the woman to get pregnant again so immediately.  The body doesn't have time to recover.

    Well said.
  • My how times have changed.  My poor grandmother had 6 kids in less than 5 years because quite often she was pregnant again by the time of her 6 weeks check up.

If you ask her why she'd say, "back then you couldn't refuse your husband".  She was having babies back to back to back.  Kinda grosses me out now that I think about it.
