Oh man. Do I feel for you. I had a brief bout with this when DS was an infant. I don't think mine was bad enough to warrant antibiotics- I just rested and took lots of hot showers and made sure to empty my milk completely. But, if you have it bad, take the antibiotics. Again, so sorry, mastitsis is brutal.
I didn't try any homeopathic remedies for the two bouts I've had since DD was born (both within 6 weeks of her birth). It really didn't even cross my mind because I felt just that terrible. I'm afraid any remedy like that would take quite a while to work (although I have no experience to base that assumption) and I seriously felt like death both times. I could barely function and take care of my toddler and newborn. Maybe if it came on slowly and gave some sort of warning I might try something like that but I was knocked on my ass within about 12 hours of the first symptom which unfortunately was not a simple clogged duct.
ETA: I've had simple clogged ducts before and was able to easily remedy those but mastitis is no joke and I doubt I could have done anything to cure it except take antibiotics.
I used homeopathic remedies - Bryonia and Phytolacca are good ones to take in tandem. Add in Belladonna if you have a fever (not the herb itself, but the homeopathic remedy, which does not have side effects). I also applied hot, wet compresses, massaged frequently, and put cabbage leaves in my bra to reduce the engorgement. In this way, I got over both of my bouts with it (the last one was just last week) within 48 hours. No abx required.
Never had it, but can't say I've ever heard that one. I can guarantee you if it was scientifically proven than I would have heard about it in my CLC class.....
GL!
The Knot won't share my Bump Siggy, so here's the low-down:

1/14/12 - Ready or not, here comes #3 (EDD 9/27/12)
i had it twice with DS... was almost worse than labor! Definitely couldn't function! I took the antibiotics the first time, but the most important thing is nurse as much as possible and pump in-between... you have to draw the infection out. Baby is most efficient, but the pump will help speed the process. My PCP said that she had equal results taking and not taking the antibiotics... she said if i could skip them id be better off long-term, and it probably would not shorten the time i was sick if i took them, so the second time i didn't and i actually got over it faster because i pushed myself to pump so much. The infection comes out in a string-like form, its really gross, but i just told myself to think of it as the pain coming out and i got through it. Oh and FYI... lots of mom's wonder but the infection wont hurt your baby, the antibodies in your milk take care of that!
I've had mastitis 3 times. Eat garlic. I used cabbage leaves instead of potato slices (but my CNM mentioned both). Massage, massage, massage. Use heat. I like to get into a warm tub and massage. And keep BF.

GL and feel better!
i haven't had it, but a good friend did.
cabbage slices
hot shower and compress the infected breast
garlic - natures antibiotic. best to eat whole cloves (chew if you can, otherwise, swallow whole), second best - garlic supplements
And here I thought penicillin was nature's antibiotic.
Thanks everyone! I tried the garlic in addition to the potato slices. It worked! I don't have a fever anymore and I feel so much better.
Yea for garlic!!!
