So my sitter is my SIL. I called yesterday to chat about one thing or another and she makes mention that she has a parent/teacher conference today and she's trying to find someone to keep the kids(DS,her daughter and another boy) for 20 mins while she and her husband go to the conference.
I was pissed. At no time did she ask me if this was okay. Hello....I'm the parent here and you don't think you should ask if someone other than yourself watches my DS for 20 minutes???????
Had it not come up she would never have thought there was an issue and I wouldn't have known any different until maybe after the fact. On top of that, I don't know the person she was going to ask to keep the kids. I know the man enough that he gives me the creeps along w/his 13 yr old son and I've never seen the wife. Just because she may trust her children to be left w/them doesn't mean I do and just because I trust her judgement doesn't make this okay.
So, DH was going to spk w/her about it this morning when he dropped DS off and let her know that if this type of situation comes up she needs our permission for someone other herself or her husband to keep DS.
Why can't her husband just not go to the conference? Who said both parents need to be there? Besides your job is to keep my child....UGHHH
Re: You won't believe what my sitter did..
"Why can't her husband just not go to the conference? Who said both parents need to be there? Besides your job is to keep my child....UGHHH"
this makes me sick. you think it's okay that only one parent is involved in the children's education? it sounds like she's doing her job- being a mom. if you're not okay with that, find another sitter but don't expect her and her husband to shirk their duties for your child.
Eh, I can totally understand why the both want to be there for a conference- it is their child. ?Yes, her job is watching your child, but her priority is going to be her own.
I agree that you should be able to meet/approve the replacement, but you can't expect her or her husband to skip important stuff concerning their own children just because they are watching yours.
?
Yes, she should've asked, but her first job is to be a parent to her own child. How dare you imply that watching your baby is more important than being involved in her own child's education.

I agree with this too!

Ditto Joe's.
It's also your responsibility to have a back-up plan as well. What would you do if she were sick and couldn't watch the baby for you?
I agree that it's unreasonable for her to assume that you'd be ok with someone watching the baby that you don't know or didn't approve of.
But, to assume that your sitter will put her child's needs second is just beyond crazy.
