Preemies

I need 27-28 week success stories please

Hi ladies. I started my cortizone shots today with csection most likely Friday night. I am 27 weeks with twin girls with TTTS. These next 48 hours of waiting for the shots to work are going to be rough. Please share any positive stories to help me get through this weekend! Thanks!

Re: I need 27-28 week success stories please

  • DD was born at exactly 28 weeks almost exactly 3 years ago (11/13/07).  She had IUGR as a result of my pre-e and weighed just 1 lb 11 oz and was 12.25 inches long.  So she was measuring quite small.  Her APGARS were 8 and 9.  Her stay in the NICU was 88 days - she came home just before her due date.

Madeline had typical preemie issues in the NICU - she required breathing assistance (vent for a day, CPAP, then nasal cannula, then back to CPAP, then nasal cannula), had plenty of apneas and bradys, temperature regulation issues, jaundice, needed blood transfusions, had a couple infections, had feeding issues and NEC scares, had reflux, etc.   But we made it through.

Once home, we continued to deal with some reflux, but it was not nearly as bad as it could have been.  She qualified for Early Intervention because of her birthweight and they worked with her on and off until she was about 2.25 years old.  She had some developmental delays, but not anything super serious.  She still can't/doesn't want to jump - LOL.  She has lazy eye, but I think it was inherited from me and not related to her prematurity.  She had surgery for that last year and recovered well from it

As I said, she is about to turn 3 years old and is doing wonderfully!  She is still small for her age, but then she has short parents.  She is super smart, social, and just all around fun.

Good luck to you and your girls!  Know that the steroid shots work wonders!  They made a huge difference in DD's oxygen needs early on.

  • I forgot to mention ... DD was in "quarantine" at home her first 2 winters for RSV season.  She qualified for Synagis shots the first year becuase of her early respiratory issues and her low birth weight.  The "quarantine" just meant we didn't take her anywhere other than to doctor's appointments and we limited the people who came to see us and they had to take certain precautions when they came over.  Since your girls will probably be born about the same time and come home near the same time DD did, their doctors will probably recommend similar actions.  In case they don't have much experience with preemies, you might need to start "training" your extended families on what to expect once they come home after you've had some time to ettle into life with LO's in the NICU.  Some families just expect that once they go home all is fine and they can go places and be held by everyone without a care ... and it takes some getting used to that they are not term babies and have different needs early one.  One of which is protection from germs their premature immune systems aren't ready to handle.
  • my amazing DD was born at 28.5 weeks about 1.5 years ago.  She just started walking at around 14 months adjusted, she is starting to talk, she amazes us every single day. having a premature, critically ill child is about the most awful, stressful experience, but i truly believe that you treasure everything they do just that much more.  hang in there--I am so sorry you have to go through this.  I am sure you have been told that girls often do better in the NICU than boys.
  • DS was born at 27 w 3d, 2lbs 5oz.  He was on a vent for 4 days, c-pap for one, and room air from then on!  He spent 62 days in NICU, an dis now 6 months old, happy and healthy.  No long term issues.  Hope that your little ones do well!

  • Thanks so much for sharing ladies. It is just hard to sit here and wait all I can do is pray and have faith. I am sure I will have tons of questions for you ladies in the upcoming months.  Our family has never had nicu babies and really we havent had a baby in our family in 5 years. My gparents refuse to get flu shots and dont really understand what to expect and honestly I dont know what to tell them. So, I am just praying to make it through the weekend!

  • honestly, i would not risk exposure to people that refuse to get flu shots.  they will have to wait until rsv season is over to meet the babies then.  it's just not worth it.  most of the girls from this board are now over on www.thepreemiepalace.com  feel free to stop by anytime!  i forgot to mention, my DD was 2 lbs at birth, was on the vent for almost a month, CPAP for a couple of weeks, & then came home on oxygen & was off around 7 months actual.  She now weighs 20 lbs. :)
  • Sarah was born at 27w3d and (the condensed version of) her story is part of the Bump's Prematurity Awareness Month feature:

  • When our daughter was born they thought she was 27 weeks but she was so small and had other developmental characteristics (like her eyelids were still fused) that made them think she was probably a 26 weeker.  Anyway, we definitely rode the NICU rollercoaster.  She was on the vent for two days, had to have heart surgery, had multiple blood transfusions and, most upsetting to us, had IVH (a grade 2 brain bleed on both sides) as well as another, more concerning brain injury.  Her prognosis was not very good.  However, we got a very happy ending.  She was discharged from the NICU a week before her due date and has no problems whatsoever since.  She's nine months old now (six months corrected) and has no delays or long term issues at all.  She's happy and healthy and everything is blissfully normal.

There are so many success stories like ours so just hang in there, be good to yourself and try to be optimistic!  Lots of hugs and prayers going out to you...

  • My DS was born at 28 weeks weighing 2lbs 6oz and 15 1/4 inches. He spent a total of 8 weeks in the NICU. on the Vent for 5 days, cpap for 2 weeks, nasal cannula for 2 weeks. He needed a PICC line IV for 2 weeks until he was getting enough breastmilk through his feeding tube in his mouth/nose. He came home at 36 weeks without anything (no oxygen, no feeding tube, no apnea monitor) We had out moments of the NICU rollercoaster like when he had to be put back into the isolette beacause he wasnt maintaining his temp. It took awhile to get him to learn to breastfeed (started at 34 weeks) thats what kept us there in the end. learning to eat. The neonatologist said girls usually get out faster than boys but the usual goal if everything goes according to course is dischsrgre at 36weeks. He is now 6 months old. He is doing great. He has had several evals for his milestones and is meeting them between his corrected and actual age for all areas. No services were needed. We did follow up with the eye doctor through the 42nd week to keep an eye on his retiniopathy which had gotten better and cleared up. We were lucky that everything went well. The steroid shots I believe worked wonders. We are a true sucess story...Hang in there.
  • Hey my son Tristan was born at 27 weeks to the day i went in the hospital on a Saturday with my water broken and he was born one week later by c-section! He was 2lbs 1oz he was on cpap for twelve hours and never need any other breathing assistant! He did have a valve that did close up but was fixed with meds! He is a wonderful 3 year old almost 4 little boy and he has no heath issues. I had the steroid shots and they worked for him he came home a month early than expected. Be there for your girls and they will do wonderful i truly believe going to the hospital everyday and being with him is what made him so strong!
  • My DD was borna t 27wks+5 due to severe pre-e and hellp syndrome. She was the size of a 24 wk baby. Today she is 2 1/2 yrs! We did hit a few bumps in the NICU but overcame them all. Our NICU told us this " you will take 3 steps forward and 2 back" It was so true. Its a long and hard journey to take but just know that you are not alone in this.
