2nd time moms I have a ?

I have noticed that my high school girls who have babies come back to school after giving birth and seem to have completely lost their ability to remember anything.  Then within 6-7 months everything is better.  Now a colleague of mine says that it is chemical (something in a pregnant woman's brain) but I maintain that a new mom has little sleep and is preoccupied with an infant.

My question is: did you notice a significant decrease in your ability to remember things or were you no different than before?

  • I think sleep does play into it, but I think having kids in general tends to make you forget things sometimes. And when I say forget things, I mean more likely to forget where I put my keys or I'll forget that I had an appt at a certain time if I don't write it down, the little everyday things.

  • It is true. The hormones in involved with pregnancy and birth allow your brain to "forget" the pains of labor and pregnancy. It takes a significant amount of time to rebuild and balance out your pre-pregnancy hormones. I am not sure about 6-7 months, but I know it is one of the reason why you have a 6 week break for your body to recover from birth.

This is my second pregnancy and with my son, I could not remember anything afterwards, but my memory seemed to return after my recovery. Now that I am pregnant again, I am back into the DIPS. (Dumbest induced by Pregnancy Syndrome.)

  • Well it took me 3 years to forget the whole ordeal of having a baby and being pg to convince myself that getting pg was a good idea again lol!

  • I am definitely more forgetful during pregnancy and after delivery. It was one of the reason we tried to write down what time and how much we fed DD at first because I couldn't remember anything! lol

  • My memory has been terrible since DS was born.  It is better now than it was immediately postpartum-I had to finish my pharmacy degree with no brain.  It was pretty rough!  I'm not sure what the cause is, and I know there have been studies that say there's no such thing as mommy brain.  I disagree!
  • Definitely more absentminded. I don't think it helps that I found out I was pregnant again when DS was 4.5 months old. lol
