Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Wow...did not expect to feel that much pain

As a follow up to my post yesterday, I decided to stay home and wait things out since I was not bleeding very heavily or having extreme cramps.   I was not at all prepared for the pain I went though this morning about 6am.

I woke up with severe cramping, and had a strong urge to go to the bathroom (#2).  While I was trying to go everything started spinning and I almost passed out.  I was dripping sweat and fighting severe nausea.  I was too weak to sit and kept laying on the floor.  I was in so much pain I couldn't even hold still and kept rolling back and forth on the floor and moaning loudly.  I literally couldn't stop.  There is no way I would have been able to sit in a car and an ER.  My husband was helpless and tried to comfort me in any way he could.

TMI:  I don't know if this has happened to anyone else, but I kept having strong urges to release my bowels, which I kept having to do as long as I was physically able to sit on the toilet.  The cramps would let up for a couple minutes when I went.  I had been quite constipated for a long time, so it was some relief.  But I did not bleed that much.  I bled more throughout the day.  I did not pass a single clot, except one when I got up this afternoon.

After the continuous contraction let up an hour later I fell into a deep sleep and just woke up (2pm).  I am terrified that since I didn't pass that much blood that it is going to happen again.  Has anyone had more than one episode of extreme pain or does that usually mean the m/c is over.  I have very mild cramping right now.

  • I lost our baby at 16w6d and I know I was in labor all day and was having contractions mostly back labor. It was unbearable. I know that the "strong urge to go to the bathroom" is labor related I felt that way until my water broke.   It was kind of bittersweet we had just gone over contractions in our class and what the husbands should do. My DH kept rubbing my back, they let up a little bit and then after we had the baby they defiantly calmed down into a mild cramping.

  • Oh I am so sorry.  That must be so much harder to endure a loss as you get further along in pregnancy.  I remember the urge to push during the final stage of labor with my daughter many years ago, but I didn't expect that this time.  I was only measuring about 6-7 weeks.

  • Yesterday I had intense, raging contractions for about 5 hours straight.  It sounds like you were worse off than I was, but it still was unbeilevable that I had any muscles that could contract so tight and so long!  It was like having a pelvic charlie horse!

I definitely had the urge to have a bowel movement multiple times--and I found some relief after poo-ing.  For me, m/cing naturally w/ an embryo/sac that meas. 6-ish wks, I have had pretty intense cramping for three days, really intense for hours at a time, then some relief.  Been passing some large clots. Today has been better overall w/ mild cramps and normal menstrual-like flow.  I'm hoping that the worst is over! Actually today, I have actually felt energetic in way I haven't felt since before I was pregnant.  I feel sort of bad about feeling so good.

I know you have the strength to get through this!  Hang in there!

  • Wow kadie...I don't think I would have been able to handle 5 hours of that pain.  That is horrible.  Mine only lasted an hour, although it was one long contraction.  The intense nausea and feeling of being about to black out just added to it.  So far today the cramps are mild.  Only one bad one that lasted about a minute.

I am glad that you are physically feeling better and it is good to know that my symptoms were not abnormal for 6-7 weeks.

  • I hate to tell you this, but I had three separate episodes like you're describing over three days.  The first two lasted for about four hours each and I passed several clots each time, and the third lasted for about an hour and a half and I passed some very large clots.

Please if you haven't already call your doctor and see if you can get some prescription pain medication to have on hand.  While it didn't do a ton for the pain during the really bad cramping/contraction times, it did finally help ease it enough for me fall asleep when they were over.

Hang in there, I am so sorry you're having to go through this.

  • Oh no...I really hope not.   That is what I am afraid of.  I do have a prescription for Lortab.   I waited a half hour to take it last night since I thought I was about to throw up but I finally took it and it did help me to fall asleep when it was over.

Ugh!!  Maybe I should have taken him up on his offer for a scheduled D&C.

Thanks for the info...it is good to be prepared.

  • I;m so sorry it was so painful for you. I hope you are doing well now. (((hugs)))
  • Thank you for sharing this. I have been miscarrying for about a week and had some bleeding and mild cramping until this weekend when things seemed to get A LOT more intense. I have had consistent cramping for several hours off and on for the past two days, like someone squeezing my insides out. I have also had that strong urge to go to the bathroom and usually have large clots come out. I feel better for a while and then it seems to start right back up again a few hours later and ibuprofen is just not doing the trick. These bouts also seem to make me feel really dizzy and faint, I did black out once yesterday and at one point my husband was tempted to take me to ER. This is my first pregnancy and I never had any idea that a miscarriage could be so painful. I was at 11 weeks, but had stopped developing very early on. I just didn't know it until this week when it was confirmed by the US and blood work, then the bleeding started. All of my friends and even the Dr. said that because I was in the first trimester it would be like a normal period, just more bleeding and cramps. That was an understatement. Good luck and hopefully that was the last episode you encounter. I am still crossing my fingers I stop cramping up soon, too. Good luck to all of you. I am very sorry for your losses, as well. I know things will get better for all of us eventually.

By the way, did any of you have any tricks for easing he pain, or is this something that we just have to deal with until it passes?     Thanks!!!!
