Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What age is a good age to start time outs?

I'm not doing it yet, obviously. But I was just curious what you ladies think what a good age to start them is.

  • I'm watching Supernanny right now and started thinking I better start them soon so I don't end up like this family!

  • I think we started around 1 1/2, but didn't start taking them serious until about 20 months old. Now she knows that she gets one warning before going in a time out. We try not to over use and she mostly only gets them if she hits, or is mean to the dogs.

We still don't force her to sit there though, just the act of the process is enough for now.

This is EXACTLY what made me think of it. Haha!

  • My girlfriend started at 18 months after seeing another friend do it with her son, same age, sucessfully.  Both kids are very well behaved.

  • Ah, I love Supernanny. :) I think some kids can benefit from them starting somewhere between 18-24 months, but 2 years sounds like a good minimum age in general. I mentioned this in another post today but our pedi said kids can start understanding TO as early as 18m. We started around 19/20 months. Alex doesn't seem to get much out of them yet but they do seem to help Will when he's getting hyper/out of control and starts hitting, throwing toys at people, etc. They give him a chance to cool off and regroup.

  • We started about a month ago. We put her in her playpen which is in our formal dining room (strange place for a playpen I know).  She has just seemed to "get it" by that I mean she's not happy when we put her in it and know when we get to 3 that's where she's headed.  We count 1 (wait 5 seconds) 2 (wait 5 seconds) then 3 and take her to time out.
