Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Im not really sure what to do.(similac alimentum)

I posted a few days ago about switching LO to Similac Alimentum  because I heard it works well for babies with reflux and sensitive tummies. Shes been on Similac Sensitive since like 2 or 3 weeks old, been taking zantac since 6 weeks. I recently decided to wean her off the meds because I havent been noticing any difference with them (we uped it and still nothing) so i figure well if theres no change then why torture her with yucky meds. A friend recommended Alimentum to help with DDs tummy and spit up. Soo reluctantly (because its like 26 bucks a can) I got some to try. Well I have tried 3 bottles and every time she drinks and oz or 2 then starts spitting it out and gagging on the bottle... So i'm assuming she doesnt like the taste. But heres the thing.... Shes totally fine, she doesnt act hungry or anything. She typically takes 3 1/2 to 4oz  and if you take the bottle away before shes done she starts throwing a fit so its really odd to me that after an oz or 2 she seems done.  So heres my question... to those of you that use the Alimentum is it more filling than other formula?   Did you notice a significant difference when you put your LO on it? I'm just trying to figure out if we should keep trying or just stick with the similac senstive and the gas drops lol.

Thanks

  • You need to talk to your pedi before taking her off meds and switching formulas.

  • Our DD didnt like the alimentum. After countless formula switches we finally settled on enfamil AR it's specifically for acid reflux.  She still spits up but about 75% less. We also use Similac sensitive for spit up.  Just so you know zantac only works for a short time (I have a book on babies with acid reflux) we ended up switching her to prevacid and that has helped a ton.

To answer your question no she was not fuller on the alimentum, in actuality it is the opposite.  It is already broken down for them (this is why it's easier on the stomach) therefore it moves faster through them making them hungrier more often.

  • Ive talked to my pedi and she says to do what works for us... she said if the alimentum works Great! if it doesnt keep trying or just stick with the same stuff. She also gave me some samples of the Enfamil AR and suggested the Similac for Spit up since we already use similac. My only reason for not trying it yet is because we tried putting rice cereal in the bottle to thicken it up and it just upset DDs tummy. So im not sure if because it the AR and Similac has rice startch in it that it will do the same thing.  DDs 4mths old and Im told she will spit up alot less and grow out of the reflux once foods are introduced. So im thinking maybe I should just stick it out?? I dont know LOL I hate switching her over and over.
  • Have you tried the soy?  The sensitive didn't work for my DD's, but the soy has helped alot.

we tried soy when we were trying to figure out what was going on with her before we knew about the reflux.  that was bad news LOL ... DD was so constipated! ... Were starting cereal soon so ive been thinking and i think we will hold off on anymore switches and see if getting something thats a bit thicker makes any difference. She likes the Similac Sensitve and has done ok on it... i just feel bad for her, i know her tummy hurts and I just wanna help her not to mention I would LOVE a full nights sleep again, she wakes up crying from a dead sleep cuz her tummy. It hurts my heart. She does spit up alot and I feel like she lives off of gas drops (not really but she does need them alot  lol) but she is gaining weight and shes otherwise pretty healthy so I think i should probably leave well enough alone for now. ....i think... =]

  • My son has reflux and is on Prilosec. The hypo formulas were worse for him! We actually had the best luck with Similac Sensitive. He does get oatmeal in his bottle, but we may stop that now since he is on solids.

If you are going to do a thickened formula, I would go with Similac RS if she has done ok with SS. Enfamil AR is their regular formula with the rice startch. SS is the lactose-free formula with the Rice Startch
