Walk away from ignorant facebook comments...

I usually stay out of trouble on facebook, but today a comment really pissed me off and I had to reply.  Someone made the comment about how utterly disgusting breastmilk was, even compared it to urine, and how formula was developed by a scientist and was perfect.  I'm way over the BF vs. FF feeding thing, how people decide to feed their own children is their business, but don't tell a new mom that you think she is feeding her child the equivalent of urine.   Now I'm in the middle of a sh!tstorm.

Its too easy to get sucked in.   I regretted my comment the second I hit enter.

Re: Walk away from ignorant facebook comments...

  • I've found people who make comments like that on FB have usually had a bad time with BFing.  I remember one girl telling a mom friend of mine who EPs that FFing is so much easier because you just mix up the formula.  I commented it was pretty easy to pop my boob out and she said she didn't like BFing because it didn't work for her.

  • Ooh what did you say? That poster is a tool. I would tell them so, myself so I'm with you.

  • i really hate that. There are constant battles on my fb about parenting
  • So, what did you say?  I try to stay out of Facebook debates, but I would have a very, very hard time letting that go by.
  • Yeah, I don't think I could have let that one go. Urine? Really? Ignorance.

  • I guess I'm not friends with girls like that.  I mean there will always be the  aws, but luckily most friends of mine are pretty chill.   I would have said something though, regarding the op.  That was too beligerent!

  • The thing that made me the most upset was that she commented on the status of a mom with a 6 week old baby that had nothing to do with BF really.  Great support.

I should have come up with a wittier comment, but I just said I'm glad our ancestors made due with such a disgusting method of feeding for millions of years before formula was invented and asked if formula was so perfect what about all the recalls.  I could say so much more but I'm done.  I'm not even replying to the ignorance she responded to me with.

I'm not friends with her, she's my friend's friend, if that makes any sense.

It could have been a comment from a friend of a friend.   If it was a friend, I probably would have de-friended them.  I don't need the possibilty of that kind of stress in my newsfeed.  I have seen those comments in response to friend's status updates and I never know what to do.  You don't want to chew out friends of a friend.

  • OK, I have to share this latest reply:

"People survived world wars as well, without anesthesia and has limbs sawed off with saws too, but I'll take an amputation in present day if given the choice."

So BF is the same urine and amputation without anesthesia. I'm really glad I'm not friends with this girl.

  • Wow yeah, I don't think I could handle being friends with her, either!

    Wow, wow, wow.

If you feel like jumping back in you could say something like, "not a single formula manufacturer can claim that their product is better than breastmilk.  Instead, they're constantly bragging that their formula is 'the next best thing' or 'closest thing' to breastmilk."  Sorry I couldn't word that any better, but I hope you get what I mean.

ETA:  I can't resist -- by the First World War we had ether and chloroform to knock people out, so few if any amputations were performed without anesthesia.  And surgeons still use saws today to cut off limbs, they're just a bit more specialized.  Not that any of that relates in any way at all to the BF vs. FF "debate" :)

I was done after one comment even though others kept going.  I'm not going to dignify her comments with a response.  She is out there.  I just had to say something about the urine comment, but now she just looks dumb.  Seriously what does amputation have to do with feeding babies at all?  Thanks though for the comment.  I always say something then come up with something really clever 5 minutes later.

  • you're right. there's no reasoning with someone like that. If they're not your "friend," I think it's fine to call them on it, but don't keep posting and replying to their asinine and illogical statements, because there's no winning an argument with a person like that.

of course, it's easier said than done when someone's a real moron, LOL! I know how it is to get sucked in!

  • This is why you de-friend or hide people.  I had to hide tons of people during the presidental election.  I didn't want to de-friend them because that would have been weird, but hiding is fine.  I don't miss them and I don't even remember they're there.

She's not my friend. She is my friend's friend so I saw her comment on my friend's status.  I totally agree with de-friending people.  Most of my friends are better educated and wouldn't make asinine comments like that. I don't care that it was about formula, I just couldn't believe how ridiculous it was.
