It reminds me of Zelda. One of the midwives at the practice I go to is named Gannon though. It made me like it more since she was a really nice, young, pretty lady and not a gross bad guy. Interestingly, the Gannon on Zelda has red hair and my midwife also had red hair.
I think it's ok. I have known a Gannon but I think my opinion of the name is heavily infuenced by the fact that he was an absolutely beautiful little boy.. I think he was named for a football player.
all I can think of is the bad guy you have to kill to beat The Legend of Zelda.
This...though before I remembered exactly where I'd heard the name before, my first thought was "wasn't that one of the monsters Godzilla fought in one of the old 'Godzilla versus' movies?"
It's a great classic Irish name. Super-uncommon, though, so I think the unfamiliarity makes a lot of people think it sounds made-up.
Personally, I don't think it has the hallmarks of a made-up name. Most of the made-up names I see go by are weird mash-ups of more common names. They are also either not found in baby books, or are listed as "variant of______".
This one is listed in the books, and it gives a firm place of orgin and a clear definition. And, it totally does not sound like it was derived from another name.
I really like it. Though I may have reservations about using it myself, I would definitely give a little Gannon's parents credit for picking an uncommon but very intelligent-sounding name.
I was guessing it was a real name, not made-up, but my first thought was still "yogurt" (and yes, I know, it's one letter off) and then Cannon. Really not a fan.
We named our son Gannon in the spring of 2010. I found the name in a baby name book and kept it in our list of maybes. We waited until we got to meet him after delivery and then felt like it was the right name for him. The name means "fair-haired, fair-skinned" and it suits him really well. Other people have really liked it or hated it. Everybody agrees that it's unusual though! It sounds like a lot of the current popular names but is just a little bit different. It's masculine sounding and rhymes with cannon. I can live with that. So far we are very happy with it and believe that he will grow up to appreciate it as well.
Re: Gannon?
Thumbs down from me, but I don't like names that sound made-up.
Long way to say...nms.

That's what DH says too, which is why I will most likely never use it.

This is a name of a University.
I vote no.
