Prenatal Vitamins

Hey ladies! I'm thinking of changing my prenatal vitamins. Any suggestions? I need one with iron bc I don't eat meat  and I was anemic with my son. I would like one with biotin too. Thanks girls!

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • I don't have any specifics for you but can tell you not to buy a huge bottle.  I was incredibly sick starting at around 7-ish weeks in my first pregnancy and thought it was normal (morning sickness - who doesn't feel sick??) and when I couldn't even keep the vitamin down, my doc suggested I switch to a chewable vit, one that is easier on the stomach (actually 2 flintstones and a 400 mcg folic acid).  3 days later I felt waaay better and the sickness stopped.

I know this does not answer your question, but something to keep in mind if you are not able to keep anything down.

    BTW: Yea for vegetarians!

  • I take the Target brand women's daily prenatal combo. One pill is a prenatal multi-vitamin with 28mg Iron and 300mg Biotin, the other pill is a DHA supplement (from fish oil). It doesn't make me sick, I take them at night.

  • Thanks girls! I hadn't even thought about not buying a big bottle (bc they seem like a better deal). I'll start out small first. Are the Target brand prenatals a perscription or OTC?

  • I am taking PreQue 10 which is a prescription. My doctor gave me 3 weeks of samples just to make sure that they don't make me nauseous and I can handle them! So far, so good!
  • By the way, I looked at the ingredient list and Iron is definitely in the pill. Biotin, which is also B7 (I think?) is not listed as an ingredient, but I could be mistaken.
  • I've been taking GNC women's prenatal formula with iron.  They haven't been making me nauseous and they are a little smaller than what I was originally taking so they're easy to swallow.
  • I don't have any specific recommendations but I wanted to agree with what the others said about not buying a big bottle. I recently finished a bottle of prenatals and bought another brand (230 count). I never threw up once when pregnant with #1 or during this pregnancy until I started taking the new vitamin. It just didn't agree with me for some reason. So, it was a complete waste.

  • My doctor recommended VitaMed MD it is 100% vegan. It includes a prenatal vitamin as well as a DHA pill with plant based omega-3. I really like it. I started with a prescription pill (prenatal plus), but I didn't like the after taste. This one is citrusy and doesn't make me burp :p

  • I use GNC's pregnancy vitamins with iron and they've been great.  Plus they don't upset my stomach.

    Good luck!

  • Do you actually have to start taking prenatal vitamins when you're pregnant? I've been taking a 'One a Day' women's formula for years (at least 8 years), I also take a B complex, D vitamin, folate and (finally!) fish oil. I haven't changed anything other than increasing my fish oil intake from 3 capsules to 8 capsules a day. Any thoughts?

  • I'd talk to your doctor but as long as you're taking in enough folic acid and the essentials you should be ok.

THIS.  I use the target DHA supplement that is all derived from vegetable sources though, not fish oil. (I believe Target's up and up brand).  The prenatal vitamins are supposedly comparable to Stuarts, which run about $50 a bottle.  Targets are WAY cheaper.

  • Hola!

I have been taking the One A Day prenatal vitamins this week and they have everything that is recommended. I usually take them with a glass of milk because my stomach is a bit intense in the mornings. Then I wait to get to work to eat some toast, because the combo of the pills and driving sets me off. :( I don't eat meat either so I am a little concerned about the iron and protein factor. I was told by a friend you really need to consume 60 mg of protein a day too, because otherwise you will really start to feel fatigued. Just something to think about....If you like yogurt the Greek kind contains 14g of protein in one container. Hope this helps! :)
