Breastfeeding

Supply "gone" at the end of the day?

My daughter nurses all.the.time.  She is for sure getting more than enough during the day.  I know this due to her wet diapers and her double chin. :)

By the end of the day it seems I'm not making enough for her.  Some night she will nurse for 1-2 hours (with 5-10 min breaks in between) and she's still screaming like she's starving.  Two nights ago after 2 hours of this game I gave her 1.5oz of frozen breast milk and she downed it and then went right to sleep.  Last night it was the same story.  Nursed for only an hour this time, screamed until I gave her an additional 1oz from the bottle and then out.

What can I do to get out of this cycle?!  I would prefer to just nurse her but it doesn't seem to be enough for her at night.  The rest of the day we don't have an issue.

Edit: I am drinking more than enough water every day.  I fill up my 24oz bottle at least 4 times.  And I just purchased the Mothers Milk tea today in hopes that it will help a little.

  • Can you just pump before the feeding and give it to her in a bottle? It might save you some time and sanity. Sometimes I wake up before my DD who STTN and pump and feed because she can be a sleepy eater in the morning and I have to get 2 other kids ready on top of myself for work, and it saves me about 15 minutes or more to do it that way. The tea will help, drink it four times a day and be sure to steep it well. I saw results with that in 2 days! I have a lower supply and supplement while at work. And it is normal for your supply to be lower in the evening. Good luck!

  • I would try waiting it out for a bit.  She is probably just going thru a growth spurt too.  I know how frustrating it is though, Luke was attached to my breast from 6-10pm for the first 6 weeks of his life.
  • it is a growth spurt (the 2 week GS is brutal) ~ try to wait it out and just keep nursing away.

Try pumping first thing in the morning after nursing for an extra 'top off' bottle if needed in the evening.

it gets better. I was there just a couple of weeks ago.

  • It is very normal to have a lower amount of milk in the evening, and coupled with a tired baby and a toddler is stressful BUT it is normal for the first 6-8 weeks the baby does a kind of 'marathon' nursing or non stop nursing, this doesn't mean you have low supply it means you have a newborn. Get a carrier and try to get some rest!
