Sippy cups and holding bottles

I need advice in getting LO to drink out of a sippy cup and/or holding her own bottle. I've tried Tommy Tippee cups, Munchkin cups (The Nuby's seem very similar to this so I haven't tried them), Avent cups and bottles, Dr. Browns cups and bottles, all with and without the spill proof valve, all with and without handles, and any combination of valve and handles. Nothing is working. I haven't tried Playtex but they seemed very hard like the Tommy Tippees which were by far the most unsuccessful for us.The Avent handles will actually fit onto Avent bottles and Dr. Browns bottles but that doesn't make any difference. I've also tried from heavy 5 ounce bottles/cups to lightweight 2 ounce bottles/cups

From reading online it seems like you only start the cups with juice but I can't give LO straight juice so the sippy cups have formula in them because she simply does not drink enough per day to risk sacrificing her formula intake (18-20 ounces on a very good day, usually more like 15-18 ounces). I don't understand this because she has gotten extremely (and stubbornly) independent in feeding herself solid foods. I would love to be able to "bribe" her into drinking from a cup just to get the juice since she has had an ounce here and there of juice when she's had a good day of formula already. Any advice would be welcome.

Re: Sippy cups and holding bottles

  • I went through the exact same thing! After using every product on the market and wasting a ton of $$, I finally gave the disposable "Take and Toss" sippy cups a try.  Believe or not, we never looked back!  He took right to them and drinks his formula from it with no problems.

The other sippy cups were hard for me to suck out so I can't imagine how much work it was for LO.  The disposables are easy to drink from and I even poked a little hole in the lids for air flow.  If they're just drinking normally they don't need the hole but ds drinks his whole cup while falling asleep so I needed the airlfow.

Hope this helps.  I know its a pain.  Good luck.

  • My DD still drinks her formula from a bottle, but at all meals we have been giving her the "Take and Toss" cups with just water in them.  She probably drinks about 2 oz at each meal.  I have also had great success with the Gerber cups with handles on the lid.  But I don't use the valve.  It means that it is a little messier, but she is starting to hold her cup on her own!
  • I didn't even consider trying the "take 'n' toss" cups but will get some after my next pay check.

I've even considered the different handle shapes and sizes. So far the Munchkin is the most likely to win the race but still seems hopeless.

Just about everyone I know takes out the valve to make it easier to drink from the cups and I completely agree that it is ridiculously hard to drink from the cups when the valve is in place. It was a great idea but I think it failed a bit on the application...With the exception of the Dr. Browns which allow a little to leak out before sealing....

     Thank You Ladies!

  • We use the Playtex ones, but what we did was just gave Snuggle the cup to play with and explore first, then put water in it for practice (if it does spill, then it is just water).  Now he takes his dinner formula in it and is pretty good with it.  It took us about 2 months to get there though, so she will do it when she is ready.
