I need some help from other parents who have experienced this. At 2 months doctor said his head was "a little flat", and to try to keep him off his back unless he was sleeping.
We went in at 3 months for an ear infection, saw another doctor, who said to start side sleeping, rotating sides at each sleep. We have seen improvement.
4 month appt today, she said that it seems that the side sleeping is helping but she referred us to the helmet people. So obviously I was very upset, and trying not to cry. The questions I have now are:
Does this place evaluate him or do they just measure/make helmets?
What should I expect?
Did anyone get a second opinion?
His head has been the same shape since he was born, I pushed for 2 hours because he was face up, so obviously that had an effect on his head. It definantly is border-line flat, my gut feeling is that he will be fine without the helmet, but I would like to talk to a specialist before we just decide to have him wearing a helmet 23 hrs a day for months.
Any advice/info would be great!
Thanks
Re: Flat head...come in
Our pedi recommended the helmet people to us today too. It is very upsetting. Hopefully there will be some responses as I am interested in what others have to say.
Please don't flame me if you are way beyond this; I just remember someone telling me about it to prevent flat head and that it really worked. But perhaps you could use it after the helmet? Or maybe you don't really need a helmet? I'm sorry you're frustrated and I wish the best to you and your LO.

I'm pretty sure that LO will need a helmet too, just waiting for the referral at his 4 month visit. After his 2nd month visit, I became obsessed with trying to get him to rotate his head to lay on the other side and while I did see some improvement, I'm still almost positive that he will need one.
I finally realized that it is not the end of the world if he needs it! Plenty of babies need to wear them and they turn out with nice, round, lovely shaped heads. It doesn't make me a bad mom and from what I have read, most babies don't even realize they are wearing it.
Our pedi referred us for a helmet for my DD at our 2 month appt. and I was hesitant (they are quite expensive, and I just didn't want her to have one...) so I decided to give her until her 4 month to see what happened. She started sleeping on her stomach at 3 months (because she learned to roll and would ONLY sleep on her tummy), and that worked wonders. She had a really bad flat spot, and it's been completely corrected just by spending more time on her tummy (sleeping and now she loves doing tummy time).
I say, trust your gut.
My LO has always had a pretty flat head...and if look at it from the top, it's bigger on one side than the other (like at an angle).
I mention it to my pedi every visit, and he isn't concerned. He says once LO can roll and sleep on tummy or side, it'll eventually even out.
It looked soooo bad for a while (LO was laying transverse with head to the side while in utero) but now it's starting to fill out more on the sides and back.
He goes in for 6mo check in few weeks and I will for sure bring it up.
