How much does heat add to your utility bill?

We just moved into a new house and its chilly here at night, We are in CA. I just want to set it between 68 and 70 at night for DS. Its off during the day. Wondering how much heat makes the bill go up?

  • I haven't really compared, but we keep our heat really low and just use blankets.  We're in MN and right now our furnace is set at 64 or 65.  We actually all sleep/live better at our house if it is cooler (and we all like blankets if we need it!).

  • I live in CO.  We keep the heat at 72/73 during the day (I SAH) and turn it down to 66 at night.  This actually costs us less than running our A/C in the summer, which we leave at 74 day and night.

  • we have a gas heater and live in los angeles.  our gas bill when we're not using the heat is around $15/mo and in the winter it goes up to $25 or $30. we keep the house at 68 at night for ds, but we turn it off (or way way down) during the day since we both work.  I think it's at 70 between 5pm and 10pm, 68 between 10pm and 6am and then 70 again between 6am and 8am then it goes down to something ridic like 55.

    HTH!

this is totally how I'd live too if it were just me!!  :)  DH is always cold at night and DS never keeps his blankets on!!  I sleep so much better when it's cold!! haha.

  • Thank you all so much!! Very helpful!! Dont want to run our bill sky high that is for sure!

  • We live in CA too and our bill goes down in the winter! We spend more on air conditioning! We leave it around 70 as well! It's been really cold (for CA anyways-HA) the last few nights! We just turned it on last night!

  • I'm probably not the right person to respond, but we live in a 4300 sq ft old Victorian with single pane glass and super high ceilings.  Luckily the attic is zoned electric heat, but the rest of the house is gas heat with steam radiators.  We pulled last winter's gas bill from the gas company and it was an average of $700 per month.  I'm actually surprised it wasn't higher.  That plus the added electric to run the attic heat and steam boiler and we're talking about $900 a month in the winter.  We just plan on being destroyed by our utility bills about 3 months out of the year.  The rest of the year our utilities in the house are super low.
  • Welllll it's kinda hard to say exactly, but in the late summer/early fall when we don't need a/c or heat our bill is around $90 then once the heat is on for the winter our bill will be closer to $300 for the remainder of the winter. Ouch.

ETA: We keep our house at 64 during the day and 66 at night.

  • Waaaay too much....we have oil heat....:(

  • we have oil heat and in MA for october thru march or april we pay about $500/month for oil.  then we usually only have 1 or 2 tank fill ups (about 500-700 depending on oil prices at the time) throughout the rest of the year

  • We have gas heat and (for now) only turn it on at night and in the early morning when it's really cold. It's added about $15/month on our gas bill so far, but I expect that to double once we have it on more often. It works out though, because our electric bill has gone down $50 since we're not using air conditioning anymore.

  • It's totally going to depend on the sq footage of your house and the layout. We have cathedral ceilings and about 1700 sq ft. Ours is about $25 in the summer because we don't use AC in Seattle. In the winter it hovers around $150-$200 a month. We keep it at 68 when we are home, 60 when we are gone during the day and 64 at night.

this... we fill up about once a month from Dec - Mar and it runs us about $450 a month.  It's outrageous!
