Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What is your goal for BF?

Originally, our goal was 6 months. Now that Audrey is having latching issues and I am EP (although still trying every darn time) I'm starting to think I won't be able to do it that long.

Just curious of everyone's goals... I feel like such a horrible mother!!!

Re: What is your goal for BF?

  • 1 year - but I take it one week at a time.

  • Original goal was 12-14 months, now I'm thinking 18.  But we never had any issues.

    Good luck!

  • You're not horrible, just keep trying. Have you tried a nipple shield? That worked wonders for latching dd on. Take it a day at a time, it'll get better.

  • Probably 18 months.  I nursed DS till he was 19 months....
  • 6 months for sure, and hopefully longer.  Brady now seems to prefer the bottle over me (after the initial letdown) so we are having a rough time.  I am determined to make it to 6 months though!
  • I committed myself to 6 months, with the option to extend my contract (Wink at that time.  I would love to make it a year, but honestly, it's been very difficult to keep up pumping with my work/travel schedule.  But travel season will be over in December, so it might not be as difficult.

  • Mine was 3 months, we had issues latching etc...so I've been EPing since day 3. I almost stopped a few weeks ago but felt guilty because I don't have supply issues and so many would do anything to be able to provide enough breastmilk for their DC. So I've continued and it's exhausted at times but I've finally got myself pumping every 5-6 hours instead of 2-3.

I go back to work on thurs so we'll see how it worksout.

I hope to pump until my son is 6 months old.

  • Ditto trying the breast shield.  DD was early and had the worst time latching, so the breast shield was a lifesaver with BF.  With time and practice, we finally were able to do it without help!  Good luck!

  • 1 yr.  I had a ROUGH first month.  All my BFing friends said they wouldn't blame me if I quit, but I stuck with it and worked with an awesome LC.  I'm really glad I did.  Keep trying, but don't beat yourself up if you don't make it that long!

  • I hope to BF at least 6 months.  I had trouble in the beginning too.  DD would latch on too hard and it was bruising me.  Then I got mastitis.  But now that we worked through those issues it's much better.  Don't give up - keep trying!

  • as long as possible...12-18 months.  and ditto PP about the nipple shield...works wonders!
  • My goal was 6 months, but we only made it to 3 weeks. ?I'm still leaking and have horrible guilt. ?DS had numerous problems BFing b/c he fell in love with a bottle at the hospital, they made me supplement & he was hooked. ?I know I shouldn't feel bad... but I do, I EP for 3 weeks and tried to BF before every feeding. ?It worn us down and I was an emotional wreck.
  • I'm going to try to go for 1 year.

  • Originally I wanted to go a year. I still want to but I will be happy if we make it to six months. I second the suggestion to try a nipple shield!! It really helped me when I was ready to give up. We used it for about three weeks and he had no problem transitioning without it. Also definately call a LC if you are having a hard time they can be miracle workers!!
  • 18 months just like my oldest daughter
  • 2 years or until she self weans.  The first 6 weeks are the hardest.  I promise, it does get easier and it is so worth it.

Do you have a LLL group near you?

  • My initial goal is 3 months (until I go back to work).  I'll play it by ear after that point.  If I can make it to 6 months I'll be very proud of myself.

  • My goal was 6 months but I had too many problems and I hated it and so did he.  I started EP but came down with Mastitis (from BFing) about 10 days ago and the antibiotics didn't help it.  So now I am stopping EPing to take an antibiotic that can't be given to him (I'm allergic to ALL the other ones).  I felt guilty at first but have great support from my family and provider.  I have enough BM saved up for about 2-3 more weeks so he'll get it for a month if it's used as a suppliment.  We had already started him on FF at night so he's adjusted already.  Don't feel guilty if it doesn't work out.  Do what is right for you and your LO.  I also used Shields my best advice is to buy a few and try different sizes.  The hospital made me use a SMALL one and it really tore my nipples up, as soon as I switched to a bigger one it felt some what better.

  • At least a year, but I love it so much we may do longer :) Hang in there, it becomes a breeze with time!

  • At least a year or until he self weans. That was my plan before DS was born, and is now also. BUT by 5 days, I was ready to give up too! I EPed for a couple of weeks, because I was having so much pain and trouble. With the help of DH, a LC, and sticking with it because I said I would, it got so much better. Things will improve, the pain will go away, and it'll be worth it :)?
  • At least a year.  When she decides she's done...we'll stop.
  • My original goal was 6 months. Now I think we'll try to keep it up for longer. I'm enjoying it more than I expected I would.
  • I'm trying for one year. Don't worry you are not a terrible mother.

6-12 months.  I almost gave up everyday for the first 5 weeks.  It's still hard but getting easier.

    DS 09/2008

  • My goal was 3 months and I made it!  Now my daughter is 4 months old and getting formula twice a day and then I bf 3 times a day.  So far it has worked out great. I am going to ween her off by the end of January b/c we are going away for a week.  If we weren't going away I would probably stick it out until 9 months.

Fortunately, my daughter was a natural at latching on...but not all babies catch on that quickly.  Keep trying and don't get frustrated.  I remember some days I was ready to pull my hair out, b/c she wanted to eat every hour!  My husband would have to calm me down and remind me how good breast milk was for our daughter.  I had many friends that tried BFing and it just didn't work out for them...you are not a bad mom, do whatever is best for you.  Formula contains all the vitamins your baby needs too!

  • 6 months exclusively is my goal and then when she begins solids I want to only do morning and night. ?But if I can easily pump at work I may try to go for a year. ?I start work when she is 5 months old so we will see how that goes...
  • I just want to thank everyone for their posts. It makes me feel like I can keep going. Today was such a rough day for me that I felt like giving up. It doesn't feel like I'm giving her enough so after she eats I pump to help my supply and then she cries again and I give that to her which I know defeats the purpose. The cluster feedings are crazy. I would go back to the lactation consultant but what do I say? It isn't like there are latch problems. I do use a nipple shield about 75% of the time. I'm trying to wean her off of it but when she is psycho crying I can barely get her to take the shield...
