Moms of Swaddlers who quit cold turkey?

Couple of questions for you- My DS will be 4 months next week and we swaddle with the miracle blanket for naps and bedtime.  He goes to daycare in three weeks and they will not swaddle there, plus he has broken out of the miracle blanket and is just getting too big for it.

1.  How long did it take for your DC to "get" that they didn't need the swaddle?

2.  The past two days he has had no swaddle during the day, but last night was night 1 without it and I had to swaddle around midnight.  Do you think if you don't swaddle during the day but then have to swaddle at night that it is confusing them?

3. Currently the only way he will sleep without it is on his tummy, anyone do this?

  • We "swaddled" him with his arms out for a few nights, then the first night without it, he was fine...he fell asleep faster without it, probably because he spent the entire time trying to wiggle his hands out of the swaddle!

I would think it would be confusing, but thats just a guess...

He does not sleep on his tummy...

  • not really sure of your first two questions. we stopped cold turkey and put her down on her tummy for naps and she was fine the first time we did it. she rolls from back to tummy and tummy to back- so she was always ending up on her tummy anyway. if we tried to put her down on her back unswaddled that was a disaster.

  • It took him a few nights to get it.  We used a sleepsack and I think that helped a little with the transition.  But when he started daycare, he was so tired/upset that we had to go back to swaddling him a little.  One way to wean is to swaddle with one arm out for a while, and then swaddle only from armpits down so that both arms are out.  That seems to be helping.

Why won't daycare swaddle him?  Mine had trouble actually swaddling him with a blanket because he's strong and broke free, but they didn't mind using a swaddleme.

I know a lot of people swaddle at night but not at naps or vice versa.  I don't think it's too confusing.

My DS won't sleep on his belly, so no advice there.
