Solids question

So you are supposed to introduce new foods, one at a time over 3-5 days, right?  That is what we have been doing, but it kinda seems like you could go on forever before you cover all the foods for 3-5 days each.  At some point did you change the way you introduced foods?  She has had apples, pears, mangoes, plums, prunes, yams, carrots, peas, and squash.

Also, I know that bananas, rice, and apples are constipating, and prunes have the opposite effect.  Anybody know any other foods that fit either of those categories?

Re: Solids question

  • Sorry I have no suggestions, but I didn't know apples are constipating? Interesting...

  • Well, when you have a kid with diarrhea, you are supposed to feed them bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast and that is supposed to help.  So I assumed this would mean they were constipating.  But apple juice is supposed to help them poo, so maybe I'm wrong.

I always thought the point of the BRAT diet was that it's bland.

I think it's both bland and supposed to help with diarrhea.  When Brett was sick, he was put on the BRAT diet as well.

  • I was told not to give Marcos apple sauce when he was constipated, it does worsen constipation. Pears are supposed to help with constipation but has never given M diarrhea. After a couple of weeks I just started mixing things together. I have been very lucky in that nothing has given him an upset stomach or adverse reaction.

We started with pears as her first solid, and she did get constipated. Her dr said it was just her system getting adjusted though. I have been avoiding apples and rice, but of course now she is sick and has diarrhea. I have been afraid to give her too much BRAT for fear of stopping her up again. Oh the joys of baby poo.
  • I have always been a "rule-follower" when it comes to all the baby stuff, but recently I gave up the 4-day wait rule for introducing new foods, for that very reason that you cited.  I felt like she was hardly able to eat anything- and I want to give her the vitamins from a varied diet.  Now I introduce about every 2 days...still only early in the day so if there is a reaction I can see it before bedtime, and I don't give her a lot of the food the first time, either.

When it comes to constipation, I found that as soon as I backed off rice cereal & introduced YOGURT she was good!  I just give her the "Yo-Baby" by Stoneyfield & it has been heaven-sent!  I swear it keeps her regular!

    GL!

  • Yogurt! That's a great idea! She never had much rice cereal so I thought I would be good but apparently not. It might not be a bad idea with the diarrhea either. Thanks!
