3rd Trimester

Stretch mark lotions that actually work?

I started getting stretch marks on my breasts and thighs lately and feel really uncomfortable about them. I have been lathering myself with Palmer's Cocoa Butter from the very beginning and surprisingly have no stretch marks on my stomach but a ton popping up all over my legs. I just wanted to know if anyone knows of anything that actually works to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. I see all of these commercials for Mederma, Mustela, Bio Oil, etc and don't know if any of them are worth the money to try. TIA!

  • There are products to reduce their color, but none to keep you from getting them. Can blame lovely ol genetics for that! I've heard Maderma does make them much lighter in color, but not until after pregnancy.

Ditto this... if stretch marks are in your DNA you will find them no matter what you do!

  • I think that Strivectin-D stuff actually does work (I've never tried it), but it's expensive and there's some other catch...like you have to put it on really frequently or something.

  • I have used this since Day 1 of this pregnancy. I swear the ones I had from DD look better, and I haven't gotten any new ones just yet. Can't say that I won't, but I don't yet.

I got the bump oil and the tummy butter, and use both every day, unless I forget.

  • Thanks Ladies! I keep hearing its all in your genes but my mom and grandmother and aunts, etc never got any stretch marks. I guess someone has to start the trend, lucky me! I also am the only who in my family or DH family who has gestational diabetes. So im really breaking the mold with this pregnancy Stick out tongue

  • Bio Oil is the only one I think kinda works. But if youre gonna get youre gonna get em, no way around it.
  • I've heard that if you are going to get them you will get them.  However drinking plenty of water and using lotion can help the severity of them.

  • I couldn't see my stretch marks until after I had the baby.  As I "shrink", I could see them more and more...  Quite depressing.

I feel ya on this one!!
I think the genetics thing is baloney!
My mom doesn't have a single one from either of her pregnancies! I don't have any on my front belly, BUT no where else seems to be sacred ! Tongue Tied
I've been using the Palmer's cocoa butter one lately and I really love it. It seems to fade the color a little bit of the ones I have now and I guess we'll see if it actually prevents any. BUT I love the smell! MMMMmm
  • I have used regular moisturizers and have just stayed well hydrated. I don't have any (yet) but am surprised because of what puberty did to the skin on my hips.

The smell of Palmer's made me vomit my first tri so I had to throw that stuff out.

  • I have been using Palmer's cocoa butter every single night since day 1 of pregnancy. I just switched to Bella B last week since I got tired of the cocoa butter smell. This one smells great and super silky!

StriVectin let me try out the new SD formula since I started working with the company and I've been using it for about 5 weeks now. They say it takes about 12 weeks to see full results but it looks like to me that my stretch marks are fading. I only apply it twice a day - once in the morning and once at night, so it's not terribly inconvenient. StriVectin is a bit more expensive, but you actually get a lot more of the product for the money (other similar brands charge the same amount for smaller bottles). And if you want to "try before you buy" you can register to win one of 10,000 free samples on the StriVectin website.

  • I used tummy butter religiously with DS1 and didn't get a single stretch mark!  For this pregnancy, I figured I just wasn't genetically predisposed to stretch marks, so I didn't use anything.  And I have a few stretch marks.

I started using Palmer's religiously and I haven't gotten any more.  Say what you will, but I maintain that using stretch mark cream cannot hurt!!!!

  • Sorry, I forgot to add that I used tummy butter every.single.day of my first pregnancy and still got plenty of stretchmarks.

My understanding is that while stretch mark cream can reduced the itchiness and later on help them fade it does nothing to prevent them. It?s genectics and probably somewhat based on how fast you grow. I know people who never used any cream and never got any. I know others that slathered it on several times a day and it didn?t make a difference. So far I don?t have any but I know they can come at anytime I have decided that instead of worrying about if I don?t get some than after the baby is born I will invest in some good scar cream to help them fade.
